TOMATO GROWING.

I EXPERIMENTS IN" NELSON. t i | Reporting on tomato experiments conducted by the Cawthron Institute last season, Mr T. Kigd, distant di- - rector of the Institute. staled that -sulphur and Whit.- Mand fertiliser wen- tested. Moth k-rtilisers were used at the rate of LH»lb per acre, and in each ease thev were raked into the soil he fore planting, reports the Nelson cori.-Nixind.-nt of the -'Weekly News •■ A standard manure, i-ousistir.g el 4001b hi pei phosphate. 300 lb sulphate of potash. lOOlb sulphate i-t ammonia, and j lOOlb of dried blood per acre, was used <»n all the plot.-, including the controls. A careful reeoid of fruit on the tomato plants was made throughout the Reason, with the following results: Standard manure, lib per plant, 4.43; rang,- of experimental error, .IP. -Standard manure plus sulphur, Lib per plant, 4.75; range of experimental error, .08. Standard manure, plus White Island fertiliser, lib £er p] an t. 4.51; range of experimental error, .13. The differences in yield of the plants under the three treatments were so small as to lie within the "probable e/ror - ' attached to the experiment. The results suggest that sulphur and White l.dam.i fertiliser are not required as plant fooxl for tomatoes on Nelson soil. Paper mulching experiments were also conducted by the Institute, building paper and saturated felt being used. Mr Rigg stated that a considerable increase in yield was obtained through paper mulching on the light gravelly soil at Stoke, but the benefits obtained did not appear to be sufficient to warrant its use in the commercial culture of tomatoes owing to the cost of the paper and of labour in laying it.
