The fares, which are substantially reduced, include travel on Lake Wakatipu steamers. Teachers' Examinations. The examinations, for which about 30 candidates | sat, were supervised by Mr C. N. Haslam, of Christchurch, assisted by Mrs B. E, Opie. | Another Telephone. The latest and much needed innovation to the local railway station is a telephone giving direct access to the enquiries office. In the past communication with this Department could only be gained through the parcels office, and this caused a good deal of inconvenience, both to the public and the railway staff. Dances. A dance, conducted by the Hampstead Football Club, in the Orange Hall on Saturday night, attracted a large attendance. The music was supplied by Mrs H» J. Chapman's Orchestra. Willis) presided over the twenty-fifth annual meeting of the Fairfield Cricket Club. The report stated that the club experienced a successful season, although it did not win the senior competition. The team was young and keen and improved combination was expected during the coming season. The batting last season was disappointing, only two or three players showing anything like good form. Many of the players, however, were enjoying their first season in senior cricket, and this undoubtedly accounted for their weak performances at times. Six members —S. Willis, G. Willis, V. Willis, W. O'Grady, C. Huffam, and T. Drennan —gained representative honours. The grounds were in good order and a good season was anticipated. The financial position was satisfactory, although a heavy expenditure had been incurred. Contributions to the fund by Messrs Huffaro and Drennan were fully appreciated. I The following officers were elected: Patron. Mr D J. Shea; president, Mr J. Willis; hon. secretary. Mr J. Price; | custodian, Mr V. Willis; management; eommittee, Messrs C. Huffam, P.
