LADIES' TOURNAMENT. A PRONOUNCED SUCCESS. (PftJCSS ASROCtATIOX GISBOKNE, September 7. To-day taw the conclusion of the most successful championship tournament both from a social and financial standpoint ever held by the New Zealand Ladies' Hockey Association. The visiting players have been entertained at functions every night, and on Sunday last over 200 of them were tafeon out twenty miles to Te Karaka and entertained by the residents and Maoris. Throughout the nine days' play in the tournament typical spring weather lias been experienced with the exception of one day early in the week when rain came on as tht second series of tlie afternoon's games started. At tendances have constituted a record, the approximate receipts ior the tournament being £(s">o. The majority of the visitors leave for home to-morrow. -Today's attendance is estimated at 2000. The final of the Millie Memorial Cup relay race was run, of 440 yards, the heats of which were run on Thursday. The result was:—Canterbury 1, Wellington 2, Poverty Bay 3. W on by throe yards. Time, 58 2-5 sec. The inter-Island match was only a poor exhibition, the game resulting in a draw, one all. Both teams were feeling the effects of the competition games and could not give of their best. The North Island had all the better of the play and deserved to win, being practically on attack all the time. North scored two goals, the second be ing netted by Miss Stubbs (Wellington), but the referee awarded a free hit to South for a prior infringement instead of playing the advantage rule. The North Island team combined better, the halves and forwards working splendidly together. Misses Brabazon (Ruahine) and K. Miller Wellington) were sound full-backs, the latter especially showing great defence. Missf Baker (Ruahine) was easily the best of the halves and made repeated openings for her forwards. Mrs Loader (Ruahine) and Misses McKinnon (Ruahine) and Stubbs (Wellington) were the pick of the forwards, swinging the ball about and exchanging passes on the run that sorely tried the defence. The South Island did not combine, and exeept when the forwards interrupted passes they hardly saw the ball all day, the South halves failing to place the ball accurately for their forwards to obtain possession. Misses Burt (Southland i and Bruere (Canterburv) were safe as backs, while Misses Belshaw (Eastern) and Thomas (South land) showed fine defence among tlie halves. Misses Horner (Southland) and Millichamp (Canterbury) were the best of the forwards, but neither had many opportunities. The game opened with tame exchanges in midfield till the North forwards broke through and Miss McKinnon dribbled the ball into the circle to give Mrs Loader a clear shot, and the Ruahine forward made no mistake. North Island 1, South Island 0. There was no further score up till half time, but after the interval South attacked, MiRS Dennis Ruahine) saving a hot shot fro® Mclntyre, but Miss Millichamp rushed in and hit the ball over the goalie s head for a fine goal. North had the better of the play to the end but could not score. Several

attempts of Miss McKinnon narrowly missed, aad the game ended i* a draw, one goal each. FIVE-A-SIDE TOURNAMENT.
