BRITISH GOODS.
GUARANTEES OF ORIGIN REQUIRED. The Mayor (Mr J. K. Archer) stated at last night's meeting of the City Council that at the meeting of the executive of the Municipal Association, held in Wellington on Thursday last, a letter was received from the British Trade Commissioner drawing attention to the necessity for public bodies when accepting tenders for goods allegedly of British manufacture on some of which preferential duties are granted to insist upon the tenderers stating the name of the country in which the goods were actually manufactured. It was stated tha'; some of these goods were imported into Britain from foreign countries and sold as being of British manufacture. The executive decided to recommend all public bodies to carry out this request. "I suggest that the matter be referred to the City Engineer," Mr Archer added, "and the general manager of the Electricity Department, with an instruction that when calling for tenders in future the specifications must provide for this. It is rather a serious matter. We give preference to goods supposed to be of British manufacture and now it is found that some of them are not of British manufacture, but have been bought by British firms from foreign countries."
