OBITUARY.

MR T. H. CAVERHILL. The late Mr Thomas Hensman Carerhill, who died at his home in St. Albans, this week, was born in 1859 at Motunau Station, North Canterbury. He was the second son of Mr John Scott Caverhill, and was educated at tho Boys' High School, Christchurch, and at Christ's College. In 1871?, ho entered the service of the Bank of Australasia at Christchurch, remaining in that branch until 1877, when lie was appointed agent at Rakaia, where he remained for six months, and was then transferred to Sanson, in the Manawatu district. Ho joined the Bank of New Zealand ir. 1879, and after being in Christchurch for about 12 months, was appointed agent at Kaikonra and later at Oxford. In 1880 he went to Palroerston North manager, remaining there till 1654, when he came to the Christchurch branch, being transferred to Kaiapoi as manager in July, 1885. having Jiarge also of the * Oxford branch. Owing to ill-health, Mr Caverhill left the bank in 1599, and had since been engaged in business in Christchurch, for many years as the Caverhill Shearing Company and agent for Combined Buyers, Ltd. Lately he had done auditing and accountancy work only. In 1880 he married a daughter of the late Francis Kelly, of Swannanoa. He leaves his widow, ono son. two daughters, and tei: grandchildren. His elder son predecoas-d him nine years ago. Mr Caverhill was a man of genial disposition, and his death will be deeply regretted in business circles, where his integrity and honour were an example to all with whom he came in contact. MR SAMUEL GIBBS. The death of Mr Samuel Gibbs, which took place on Thursday morning at his home at 308 Papanui road, wiil bo deeply regretted by a wide circle of friends. Mr Gibbs, who was a well known breeder of stud Shropshire sheep, was for many years one of the most highly respected and successful farmers in the Woodend district, where he was born in 1862. He lived there until 13 years ago, when he joined the staff of the Canterbury Frozen Meat Company, Ltd., acting as their representative for the Belfast Works and generally supervising the company's outside interests. An excellent judge of stock he was a familiar figure at their weekly sales and the various agricultural shows throughout the province, where he oommanded the respect and confidence of all with whom he came in contact. At the time of his death. Mr Gibbs was one of the trustees of the Rugby street Methodist Church, of which he was an active member. He was also an active member of the Woodend Methodist Church and Sunday School while he lived there. He leaves a widow, one son, Mr Clifford Gibbs, and three daughters, Mrs W. Butcher. Mrs C. L. Hardie, and Miss Rita Gibbs. The funeral was held yesterday afternoon, and was attended bv a large number of friends and relatives. The cortege, of over a hundred cars, left Mr Gibbs's late residence for the Woodend Cemetery. The pall-bearers were Messrs C. L. Hardie, H. W. Hes■op, Arthur Joseph, T. Chester, and Richards.
