OPAWA BURGESSES' ASSOCIATION.

Owing to the small attendance, the first annual meeting of the Opawa-Hillsborough Burgesses' Association was postponed on Monday evening until August 19th. The annual report stated that 18 householders attended the first 'meeting, held on August 9th, 1928. During, the year the membership had grown to 56. A.mong the improvements effected and suggestions made by the Association to local bodies in and around Christchurch were: —(a) The removal of the telephone booth at the Opawa bridge to a more advantageous and less dangerous position; (b) the rounding-off of the corner of the Opawa bridge into Ford road, giving traffic a greater margin of safety; (c) the metalling of Railway terrace; (d) the City Council agreed to round off the corner of Opawa road and Locarno street; (e) the removal of a dangerous light pole in Richard, son terrace; (f) the re-forming of the footpath in Reeves road; (g) representations to the Post and Telegraph Department for a branch post office m Opawa; (h) representations to the City Council regarding a traffic bridge over the Heathcote river in place of the present footbridge at the foot of St. Martins avenue; (i) representations to the Christchurch Tramway Board for a more direct tram route to Opawa; and a deputation to the Board regarding a feeder service to Avoca and Horotane Valleys. Among other suggetlions under consideration w-as the erecting of a hall and library in the district, in connexion with which a special committee had been set up to draw up a report. The finances of the Association showed a credit balance of £3 7s 6d.
