UNEMPLOYMENT.
CITY COUNCIL'S RELIEF WORKS. [Registrations yesterday totalled 18; of these 12 were married men. Three men were placed in private employment. The figures for the week, compared with those for the previous week, are as follows: Last Prev. week. week. New applications .. 144 128 Total at end week .. 680 641 Tit for heavy work .. 561 543 Fit for light work .. 119 9J3 Placed .. ..4 103 Of those placed 11 were found jobs under the Public Works Department (58 the previous week); 25 on local bodies' work (39 the previous week), and four were found private employment (six the previous week). On reliei works the City Council yesterday employed 104 men. Now that the new schedule of works has been approved more men will be taken on gradually as opportunity offers. With the advent of finer weather work has been offering in the country districts. Farmers are eutting baek gorse hedges, preparing land for spring wheat, and tuning up milking machines; The tidying up of the City and suburban gardens also is absorbing a certain amount of labour.
