TIMARU PRESBYTERY. The monthly meeting of the Timaru I'rvHby tery was held yesterday, the Mn l. rator (liev. 11. It. Fell) presiding. A. motion of condolence with the family of the late Mr tioldsman, formerly an elder of Trinity Churcu, was earned. The < lerk (Rev. A .lam Befit;} was . ir>*t ructed to write convoying the sympathy the Presbytery to Mr It. W. A. I'ren-jm, home missioner at Catlins, Otago, in his illness. 'J'he Itev. It. M. Ityburn, Director of tlu> Youth of the Church Committee, wrote expressing thanks for the approval of the Timaru Presbytery that the summer conference should be held in VYaimate, and thanking the Presbytery for its invitation. The Rev. F. It. Chai man, formerly of j Morven, and now of Broken Hill, wrote impressing appreciation of the kindly ami gracious minute of the Presbytery. The question of a call from the Morven congregation to the liev. J. Tennant, of Belfast, was then discussed. The Commissioners, Messrs J. C. Ilay (Morven), J. Stark (VVillowbridge), ami A. Cuthlurtson (Glenavy) said the call was unanimous, and the members of the congregation were desirous that Mr Tennant should accept it. Tho Moderator pointed out that Mr Tennant had to serve under the Supply and Appointments Committee for three years, and that period had not yet expired. He asked the Morven congregation to defer the acceptance of the call for one month so that an opinion could be secured from tho Judicial Com m ittee. The Rev. Adam Begg said he had been iu communication with some members of the Christchurch Presbytery, who stated that the northern Presbytery was prepareil to put the call through, provided the Timaru Presbytery was agreeable. Mr Hegg moved, and the Rev. VV. P. Nichol seconded: "That this Presbytery, while regretting ttiat Mr Tennant has not yet served under the Supply and Appointments Committee for the period mentioned . by the Assembly, since the call has come before it, feels that in tlie interests of the Morven congregation it cannot take the responsibility of staying proceedings, and therefore sustained the call to Mr Tennant, and directs that it be transmitted to the Clerk of the Christchurch Presbytery." The Rev. A. J. H. Dow said they had to consider the conditions under which Mr Tennant had been ordained. While he had every sympathy with the Morven congregation he did not wish the Presbytery to do anything to place either itself or the Morven congregation in an awkward position. After further discussion Mr Oow moved, and the Rev. T. Btinson seconded an amendment: "That the Morven congregation be recommended to approach th? Supply and Appointments Committee asking them to appoint Mr Tennant for the necessary term." The amendment was lost by ten votes to nine, and the Rev. Mr Begg*s motion was carried by twelve to nine. The Presbytery then decided to sustain the call, and the Rev. G. K. Aitken was asked to support the call before the Christchurch Presbytory. It was decided that on Mr Tennant accepting the call the induction at Morven tako place on August 30th, that the Rev. W. P. Nichol preside and induct, the Rev. Harkness address the minister*! and the Rev. A. J. H. Dow address the congregation. Mr Alex. Shaw, Session Clerk, Temuka, wrote asking Presbytery to forward a Sunday school teacher's diploma for the family of the late Mr Samuel McCully. Mr McCully had been a Sunday school teacher at Milford for 34 years. He had neglected to apply for the certificate, and Session thought it would be a gracious act to forward it to Mrs McCully. The Presbytery decided to accede to the request, the Moderator paying a tribute to the valued services rendered to the church by the late Mr McCully. Erection of Conveniences. It has been arranged that Messrs John Hole, William C. Raymond, P. J. Roileston, G. J. Wallace, and W. H. Walton shall wait on the Borough Council on Monday night to protest against the proposal to construct underground conveniences at the intersection of Stafford and Strathallan streets. Btmm at Presbytery. The eustomary tranquillity of the Timaru Presbytery was somewhat disturbed at the monthly meeting yesterday, when, after a lengthy discussion on the question ot military training, a sharp passage occurred between the Rev. J. B. Hall and the Moderator (Rev. H. it. Fell). The discussion arose when Mr Hall enquired what was the position with regard to the supply of a minister for the St. Andrew's charge, which had been vacant for about eight months, supply having been obtained from another Presbytery. He thought that this should not be allowed, as they had three retired ministers in the Timaru Presbytery whose services were available. Mr Hall contended that it was wrong to bring in men from outside Presbyteries. The Rev. W. F. Nichol: Mr Moderator, 1 think that Mr Hall is out of order. The Moderator: You are out of order, Mr Hall. He explained that the matter had nothing to do with the Presbytery. It was one solely for the St. Andrew's session and the interim Moderator. So long as the arrangements made by the St. Andrew's session for the supply of a preacher were satisfactory there was no need for the Presbytery to interfere. Mr Hall: But The Moderator: You are out of order, sir! Mr Hall: I am not out of order I Cries from the meeting: You are out : of order! I The Moderator: Yon are out of order; j ■it down! Mr Hnlt: lam not! I will do no j such thing! At this stage the clerk (the Rev. Adam Begs) explained that if he wished to sneak Mr Hall cou'd move that the j Presbytery was opposed to the Modera- | tor's ruling. Mr Hall: I will do no.such thing. A voice: Don't hold up the meeting. Mr Hall advanced towards the Moderator's table. "I will not sit down," he said. "1 won't sit down! Why should 1 sit down when I ask a question V' The Moderator: I answered your question fu'ly. He repeated his previous exnlanation, saying, '"J have given my »nd will not nrirue." Mr Hall: T will be «to not listen I can take mv case to the The discussion was then dropped.
