PIER AND BATH.

A NEW BRIGHTON PROPOSAL. "That, with a view to approaching the Local Bodies' Loans Board for tt loan to purchase the New Brighton Pier, construct a salt-water bath, and purchase a road-making plant, an estimate of the value of the pier and a report upon its condition be obtained; also *hat plans and specifications of the proposed swimming bath be obtained, as well as estimated cost of a steam road roller, grader, and tar sprayer." This resolution was moved by the Mayor (Mr J. H. Shaw) at last night's meeting of the New Brighton Borough Council. Before anything definite was done to get a loan sanctioned, he said, they must have plans and specifications of the swimming pool, and also an estimate of the price. A report on the pier was also necessary. They had tried many methods of purchasing a road roller, which they all knew to be necessary for the proper upkeep or the roads, but it was beyond the borough's capacity to pay for it all in one vear. The roller, with the plant, would cost about £2OOO. Neither this nor the pier scheme would be a charge on the rates, so he thought that the ratepayers would be agreeable. They would have the last word when a poll came to be taken. Cr. F. D. Muirson said they should not take anv definite action before the Council had discussed the different points. There was the question of the situation of the bath tor one thing. Other Councillors thought that a full discussion would do good. The Mayor said he could not see the advantage of the Council discussing the proposal until they had definite plans and estimates in front of them. That was one of the reasons for his bringing the motion down in that form. In reply to a question, the Mavor said he thought that a plan of the baths would cost about £-50. Finally, the Mayor amended his motion so that it provided for a reDort on the valuation of the pier being obtained This aspect, together with the whole question, will be considered at a special meeting of the Council, in committeee. Mr F. W. Freeman is to be asked to furnish the report.
