TUNNEL ROAD.
DISCUSSED BY ECONOMICS SOCIETY. At the monthly meeting of the Canterbury Branch of the Economies Society of Australia and New Zealand, the tunnel road scheme was discussed. Professor A. H. Tocker presided over a good attendance. The discussion on the scheme was introduced by four members of the executive of the Port and City League— Messrs F. W. Freeman, A. L. Macfarlane, W. R. Lascelles, and H. M. Chrystall.- Each speaker dealt with a separate aspect of the scheme. A vigorous and interesting discussion ensued, in which there took part the chairman, Messrs J. S. Roscoe, S. Schoiefield, W. Stewart, I. W. Weston, G. Maginness, V. Smith, and Professor Calvert. _ | The general feeling of the meeting appeared to be that Canterbury had been very much handicapped by her lack of port facilities comparable with those in the North Island, and that the Port and City League were heartily to be commended for the energy and enthns- ! iasm thev had shown in working op the tunnel road scheme. Several members considered that the greatest difficulty appeared to lie in the alteration of Lyttelton Harbour, as that alteration probably would be expensive. If the facilities at Lyttelton Harbour could be greatly extended and increased, the case for' the tunnel road would be extremelv strong. The view was expressed that it would be well worth while to investigate fully the possibility of securing better port facilities for Christchurch. . A vote of thanks to the visiting speakers concluded the meeting.
