By the generosity of readers of The Press since we opened our Earthquake Relief Fund ori June 22nd. we have been able to aen<\ the Prime Minister a cheque for £4OOO to be paid into the Central Belief Fund m Wellington. All thia money has been provided bv our readers in response to our first appeal for assistance, and we wish we could say that no more is required. Unfortunately, as much more is required as our readers cm afford to give, and our fund will still remain open for their contribution*.

THE MAYORS LIST.

By noon yesterday the total of the Mayor's list had reached £8925. Additional subscriptions were as follows:

T\ ■ • "Iters of the Cfaristchurch Tramway Union are to b© invited, at tbe Annual meeting to be held next Tuesday, to agree to a proposition that a levy of 10b per member be struck in aid of the victims of the West Coast earthquakes. The collection of the levy, it is suggested, should be at the rate of not Jess than Is per fortnightly pay day. Already the executive of the Union has given £SO, which was transmitted direct to the Mayor of Westport, If the levy is agreed to, this amount will be reimbursed to the Union's funds.
