A HUGE TOTAL. "Pacts and Figures of the Automobile Industry," 1929 edition, published by the U.S. National Automobile of Commerce, reveals that motor vehicle registration outside of the United States now equals 7,i85,000, which compares with 7,585,000 registered in the United States on December 31st, 1919. This volume, which is the eleventh annual edition, covers data for the calendar year 1928 and is a compilation of statistics dealing with all phases of motor transportation. Among the facts presented are the following:— Automotive freight carried by U.S. rail lines during the past year amounted to more than 3,500,000 car loads. Motor vehicle taxes in 1928 amounted to 808,000,000 dollars. Arizona led the States in increase of motor vehicles with a gain of 16 per cent. California has the most automobiles in proportion to population, with one car for every two and seven-eighths persons. Seventy steam railroads are using motor-trucks lor short hauls and terminal service. Motor-truck registration in the United States totals 3,113,999. Passenger car registration is 21,:>79,125. Total registration of motor vehicles is 24.493,124. There are 92,000 motor-buses in the States. __ Seventy-two of the railroads in the United States are operating 2115 buses. There were 36,000 miles of surfaced roads built in 1928. There are 4,341,000 persons employed in motor transportation,
