TIMARU.

ODDFELLOWS' LODGE.

The fortnightly meeting of the Loyal Timaru Lodge of Oddfellows was held on Wednesday, when Bro. J. A. E>avi« presided. A welcome was extended to D.G.G.M. Bro. W. Dempsey and P.G. Bro. Andrew McLauchlan of Loyal Itcart of Friendship Lodge. Two new members were initiated and another was proposed. Four members applied for their second degree. An invitation from the Ashburton district to be present at a function in Loyal Tinwald Lodge was received. Reports from both the Boys' and the Girls' Juvenile Lodges showed everything to be going on well. Bros. A. McNaughton and P. Han.'in were appointed official visitors to the Girls' Lodge and Sister M. Kelly and Bro. E. Lane to the Boys' Lodge. Details of the impending anniversary of the Girls' Lodgo were given. It was decided to hold a ladies' night ia the near future. Magistrate's Court. A sitting of the Magistrate's Court was held yesterday, Mr C. R. Orr Walker, S.M., presiding. On a charge of cutting a corner, Robert Steel Grant was fined 30s. George Vallance Rowbotham was ordered to pay costs on a charge of leaving a car standing for a longer period than 20 minutes. Henry Charles Hooper was fined 20s for driving a motor-car without a license, and 40s for driving in a negligent manner, and his license was suspended for a month. David W. Reese was ordered to pay costs for driving a motor-car without a license. i George Christmas and Walter James Walker, charged with aiding in the commission of an offence under the Licensing Act, were fined £5 and £3 respectively. George Thomas Register was fined 20a for procuring liquor during the currency of a prohibition order. Alexander Glennie was fined 20s for being on the licensed premises of the Carlton Hotel after hours. The Inspector of Factories (Mr G. MoKessar) proceeded against George Campbell for delivering coal, the weight of which did not comply with the provisions of the Weights and Measures Act, 1923. A fine of £2 and costs was imposed. On a charge of having failed to attach a guard rail to a bricklayer's scaffolding exceeding 10ft in height, Peter Hunter was fined £3. A charge of cycling at night without a light preferred against James Parker Russell was dismissed. John Shore, charged with failing to comply with the terms of a maintenance order in respect of his children, the arrears of which amounted to £l7 10s np to June 27th, was sentenced to three months' imprisonment, the warrant to be suspended so long as he pays the amount of the orde? and 5s a week off the arrears. Bugby. The following team has been selected to represent Town in the Town v. Country trial match at Fraser Park tomorrow:—Fleming, Wilkes, A. Lawson, Mcintosh, Judge, Brown, Roper, R. Stewart, Harding, Cunnold, Stevenson, Ledingham, King, Bassett, E. O'Sullivan. Reserves: Wilkinson, Currie, Adkins, Seaton, Bogers, and Mahan. WINCHESTER. The Winchester Men's Miniature Rifle Club held its weekly shoot on Tuesday, when there was a good attendance. Mr L. H. Orbell's trophy was competed for and A. Crippa proved the winner with 78 off the rifle. A friendly match was fired between the Winchester and Hilton teams. Winchester won by 757 points to 756. Mrs De Renzy, Winchester, has entered her choir in the Children's Musical Festival, to be held at Temuka this evening. Besides taking part in the massed choirs, they will sing a unison song "Slow, Horses, Slow."

WOODBURY. At the weekly practice of the ladies' Miniature Rifle Club, on Tuesday evening, the following were the best scores: Mrs Cain 76, Miss Jefferson 75, Mrs Riches 73, Mrs Baker 72, Mrs Harris 70. The Woodbury Water-raee Committee has appointed Mr S. Meynell as ranger for the coming year. On Wednesday evening the Woodbury Men's Rifle Club fired a friendly match with Four Peaks, on the Four Peaks range. Woodbury won by 731 points to 720. ORARI. The improvements in the Orari Hall have made it very popular for dances, a fact that has been proved by the financial success that has attended this season's dances. A further proof of its popularity is now given by the fact that the Waihi Football Club, which previously held its annual ball at Winchester, has decided to hold it at Orari this year. M,r O. S. Priest is secretary, and elaborate arrangements are being made for the success of the evening. The monthly dance, arranged by the Orari School Committee, was held in the hall on Wednesday, and was fairly well attended. The music was supplied by Kelland's Orchestra, while an extra was given by Miss May Killoh. Mr Frank Priddle was M.C. The Ladies' Miniature Rifle Club held its weekly shoot on Tuesday evening, when good scoring took place. A trophy, presented by Mr J. Campbell, was competed for, and won by Miss H. Kiely. It is hoped to increase the Orari School library, and with this end in view one interested parent has generously given a set of seven volumes. Orari is experiencing a series of hard frosts, but these are followed by warm sunnv days.. . \ Miss Kathleen Kiely (Christchurch) is the guest of Mrs W. Quirke. Mr and Mrs S. R. Muff and Miss Kathleen Muff left on Wednesday to spend a holiday in Ch istchurch. Mrs E. Carter is on a visit to Christchurch. ST. ANDREWS. The weekly shoot of the Bluecliffs Club was well attended. The challenge cup was won by M. McCarthy, who beat J. Collier in the shoot-off. At the weekly shoot of the St. Andrew's Rifle Club the prize was won by E. Thomas.

GERALDINE.

PERSONAL. Mr H. A. Harper (Timaru) is spending a holiday in Geraldine. School Games. On Wednesday afternoon football and basketball matches were played at Geraldine between teams from the Geraldine and Pleasant Point District High Schools. The basketball resulted in a win for the visitors by 8 goals to 4. The football match was of a very even nature and resulted in a win for Geraldine by 6 points to nil. Both tries were scored by C. Wilson. Mr G. Glover was the referee. After _ the matches the visitors were entertained at afternoon tea. Belief Fund. The following additional subscriptions have been received towards the Earthquake Relief Fund opened by the Geraldine Borough Council: —E. H. Logan, £2 2s; Dr. and Mrs Hislop, £2 2s; H. Titheridge, £1; E.F., £l. Benefit Entertainment. There waa a good attendance at the Town Ha on Wednesday evening to witness an entertainment organised by Mr C. Knight, the proceeds of which are to be devoted to the Earthquake Relief Fund. The Geraldine Band was in attendance and played several selections outside the hall. The entertainment took the form of a picture show interspersed with musical items. Music for the pictures was supplied by an orchestra comprising Miss Gimson and Messrs J. P. Cliff and Crowe. Songs were given by Mrs A. McKenzie and Messrs Knibb and Gimson. Some most enjoyable numbers were given by the Musical Society under the baton of Mr E. White. Mr C. Knight thanked those present for their patronage and stated that the sum of £lO would be handed over to the Belief Fund.

TEMUKA.

CHOIR FESTIVAL. Over 200 voices will be heard in unison at the Children's Choir Festival to be given in the Dominion Theatre, Temuka, this evening. Choirs are coming from Pleasant Point, Geraldine. Orari Bridge, Milford, St Joseph's (Temuka), Temuka District High School, Arowhenua Native, Watt-Lowry Boys, and Miss de Renzy's (Winchester). In the massed choir numbers, which will be accompanied by a string orchestra of nine instruments, there will be approximately 200 voices. This festival, which is the first of its kind held in New Zealand, will be in charge of Mr T. Vernon Griffiths (Christchurch). Personal. Mr and Mrs A. Rhyder, who have been on a visit to Mr and Mrs G. C. Tully, have returned to Dunedin Mrs Routledge left for Dunedin yesterday on holiday. Miss Azalea Peoples, who spent a five weeks' holiday in< Lumsden and Dunedin, returned to Temuka yesterday. Miss Nita Scott (Geraldine), who has been trained as a nurse in the Wairau Hospital, has passed all her examinations and has been appointed by the Hospital Board as a staff nurse at the Wairau Hospital. Misa Scott is a daughter of Mr and Mrs John Scott, Raukapuka.
