WAIfARA. A' 'Tery successful hare drive was held in aid of the earthquake fund, when twenty-six guns turned out.. After' an enjoyable day's sport, a bag of one hundred and seventy hares was secured. Afternoon tea was provided by the ladies at the residence of Mr . t Quiigley. The net proceeds of the day's effort , was over £2O. oxford; There is an epidemic ,of T colds; and. ' of influenza in the • district. The attendance at the school has been so I affected that . the infant department was closed on Wednesday. The cases are not serious. | A meeting convened by the County Council was held in the Town Hall to consider the matter, of * securing support to the fund for the relief of the sufferers by the earthquake. There was a very small attendance. The chairman, Mr A. Meyers, said the Council had made a grant of £25, and it was for the public meeting to say what the district would raises He called for m proposal. Mr P. Garliak said he was not a believer in subscription lists, as only a "comparatively small number responded, and 'he 'moved that the Council double its contribution. This was seoonded by Mr >C- Stevenson. Mr . 8.. Feary sai& .be did not think the Council could lie bound by a resolution of such a »mall_.meeting, and even an additional £23 would not be an adequate contribution from the district to the fund. It was suggested tljat collection boxes be plaoed in the business houses of" the township, which would catch the small amounts. The Rev. C. W. Brown said he thonght there should be a house-to-house canvass. It was decided that subscription lists be left at the business places in Oxford for a fortnight and that if the response was not satisfactory, the matter would be reconsidered. Retiring collections have been, or are being, taken up in the churches, and a number of -local organisations have made contributions from their funds. -■- ■ | HALSWELL; Special thanksgiving services were held in St. Mary's Church for the recovery of bis Majesty the King, the vicar being the preacher,- A. collection in aid of the earthquake sufferers was taken up.
