CARING FOR THE REFUGEES.

MEN'S CLOTHING WANTED. THE MAYOR'S APPEAL. The Mayor (Mr J. K. Archer) told a reporter yesterday that he was informed that there is a shortage of men's clothing and boots at Seddonville, and it is intended to forward bundles of clothing and boots from Christchurch on Saturday. Mr Archer said that if people who had any men's clothing and boots to give away communicated with the Town Clerk (Mr J. S. Neville) arrangements would be made for them to be called for. Some of the mothers amongst the Seddonville refugees would be glad to have perambulators. There is a shortage of billets and the Mayor will be glad to hear from any householders who can provide accommodation for some of the refugees. The shortage of accommodation is a serious matter for the committee, and as there are some large families an appeal has been made for a few cottages to be lent to the committee in order to house the refugees. If possible, the committee would like them furnished, but if this cannot be done offers of unfurnished houses will be readily accepted and an effort will be made to secure furniture for them. The people from Seddonville attended at the City Council Chambers yesterday when there was a distribution of clothing, but supplies were soon exhausted In one "of the committee rooms Crs. A. E. Fraer and E. R. McCombs and Mrs J. S. Neville and Mr H. S. Feast, of the Council staff, dealt with each familv as thev were brought in from the Council Chamber. Piles of clothing were laid out on a trestle table, and as each familv came in it was provided with whatever was suitable. In other cases orders on shops were issued.

Mrs Fraer said that supplies of everything were short. More pushchairs were needed. A dozen had been given, and for these the committee was very grateful, fcrat there were so many voung chi'dren in the party that pushchairs were still short. More clothing also was needed, added Mrs Fraer.
