NEW TYPE OF KAURI.
GROWTH IN THE TROPICS. Mosi New Zealanders loot on the kauri as a tree to be feund only in their country and do net ktow that other species, although not as valuable a3 the New Zealand tree, are femad in Queensland and the various growpa of islands to the north of Australia. Mr V. K. McGregor, lecturer in zoology at the Auckland University College, made a complete study of the various species of kauri during a scientific expedition to New Guinea and the Solomon Islands, from whieh he returned by the Maram*. '•I have collected specimens of the different species," Mr McGregor said. "That moat closely resembling the Xew Zealand type I found on the island of Vanikoro, is in millable quantities aad ghould be well suited for building purposes. Indeed, the Kauri Timber Company has established a settlement there and is attempting to work the timber. The island is small and very high. Heavy forests cover rugged hillsides, scoured by deep ravines, and the kauri, although it is plentiful, is somewhat scattered. The climate is exceedingly wet and most unhealthy, and it vill be a difficult task to cut and mill this timber by European labour."
