RANGIORA. At the tennis carnival the identity of the mysterious Mr X was guessed by Master Bruce Jordan. The mystery man was Mr A. W. McKinney. The prize was a bicycle. The subject debated by the Celtic Club on Tuesday was "That the men and women of to-dav are superior to those of fortv vears" ago." The affirmative waj taken fav Mr P. The funeral of the late Mr 3 Elizabeth Jane Derrett took place at the Waiau cemetery on Tuesday afternoon. A short service was held in the Anglican Church, during which the Eev. E. B. Moore referred to the devout Christian life of the deceased. She had regularly attended both the Anglican and the Presbyterian Churches, and he extended his sympathy to both congregations in their loss. The cortege was a long one, practically every family ii the district being represented. The paHbcarers were Messrs J. K. Forbes, C. A. Forbes, C. G. Douglas, and C. A meeting of householders was held in the Kink Hall to consider a community effort to raise part of the cost of lining the roof of the hall. Tho meeting was convened by Mr P. J. Thorne, and he was voted to the chair. He explained that it was proposed to open a subscription list to raise the sum of £SO towards the cost. A committee was formed of those present, and Mr F. McGowan was appointed chairman and Mr P. J. Thorne secretary. Canvassers were appointed as follows:—Township, Mr F. McGowan; Leithfield road, Messrs D. Morris and C. Lewis; swamp, Messrs F. H. Ford and J. Champion; Downs, Messrs F. James and L. McGowan; Ashley, Messrs G. James and A. Ashby. A further meeting is to be held in a fortnight to report the result of the canvass. The Methodist Ladies' Guild met at Mr Thome's yesterday afternoon. It was decided to send a parcel of clothes to the Earthquake Relief Fund, and to hold a bring and buy afternoon next month. HALKETT. Special thanksgiving services for the recovery of his Majesty the King were held throughout the Halkett Presbyterian parish on Sunday. The Rev. Theo. Paterson preached to large congregations at each centre. The retiring collection taken up at the afternoon service held at Halkett in Aid of the earthquake sufferers amounted to £l2. A very large and representative gathering of Halkett residents . as-r sembled in the schoolroom on Tuesday afternoon for the purpose of bidding farewell to Mrs J. Mclnnes and her family, who are leaving the district to take up their residence in Templeton. Songs and recitations were contributed by the school children. A verv amusing competition was won by Mrs W. H. "Walker. Mrs Geo. Davis, speaking on behalf of the residents, referred to the long time that the guests had iived in the district, a period extending over twenty-six years. During that time Mrs Mclnnes had made manv friends, and had always assisted in "any movement for the welfare of the district. She had great pleasure in handing to her an eiderdown quilt with a wish that she would be-long spared to enjoy its comfort. Mrs Davis also presented to Miss Jean Mclnnes a hand-bag, and to Miss Lena Mclnnes she handed a manicure set. On behalf of the school children, Master A. CaHer presented Hector Mclnnes with an electric cycle lamp and torch combined. The recipients suitably acknowledged the gifts. Afternoon tea was handed.round. SOUTHBRTOGE. At the monthly meeting of the Southbndge Town Board, Commissioner J. Griffin presided. The chairman reported having convened a meeting to consider means of aiding the sufferers by the earthquakes on the West Coast. It had been decided to open lists and canvass the district. So far, the canvassers had met with a good response. The Board voted a contribution to the relief fund. The chairman stated that he had interviewed the Power Board's engineer regarding the street lights, which had not been satisfactory. He had also asked whether a more favourable rate per lamp could be given if the Board decided to have a larger number. Tho engineer had promised to consider" the matter and advise the Board later.
