LIFE SAVING.

♦ MEETING OF COUNCIL. A meeting of the Council uf the itoyal LifeSaving Society was held last night. Mr G. E. Bilkon occupied the chair. The secretaiv announced that the following were the results so far to hand of the competition for the Wig-ram Shield: TVanganui 16.2, Canterbury 8.8, Otago 6.1, and Auckland 5.6 po.nta. The Council in endeavouring to interest the Education Department in providing nn instructor in swimming and life-saving. Tho large toll of deaths by drowning which were recorded last season had led the Council to nuke strenuous efforts in all directions that tend to extend the practice of life-saving throughout Sew Zealand. The Council has distributed a circular encouraging the formation of clubs, and steps towards obtaining a Government instructor had since been taken. It had also written to the authorities offering its services for the '.raining of all members of the police force in swimicing and life-saving. In regard to the Council's action in asking the Government for an instructor, it had the support of all th<head Centres in Se* Zealand. ARANUI BURGESSES. | ♦ MEETING OF ASSOCIATION. The monthly meeting a'. the irmm Burjmhs' Association ru held Uit evening, Mr J. D. Sproien presiding. It was decided to ask the Heatbcote County Council to place screenings and metal an Bexley footpaths and roads. The secretary vu instructed to write to the City Council asking it to asphalt the road and footpath on Page'a road from the Bandilands tram shelter to the City bout dary. A member stated that very little had been dons to this ares, sad lupin* and grass had Crown over the footpath. The Heatbeote County Council had carried out this work in that portion of Page's road which came under iti jurisdiction, bat the City Council had done nothing to its portion. The City Council wrote stasis* that it waa attending to the Association's request for clearing the silver poplar* in Bnrtoa road and the rolling of the footpath from Breeze's road to Burton road. Mr D. 0. Sullivan, M.P.. wrote Hating that he had referred the request for Government assistance for the Axanui library to the Hon. Mr Atmore, who had promised to give the matter favourable consideration. The New Brighton Borough Council wrote stating it would give the Association iti tupport in a request to the Tramway Board for a double tram track from High atreet to Stanmore road. Mr B~ Loveli-Smith explained that the Association had written previously to the Tramway Board in the matter, but the Board had refused the request. He pointed out that the So. 10 tram caused considerable delay to the Brighton tram- There were too many waits on loops. It was decided to write to the Tramway Board asking when it intended to reopen the question of a doable tram track from High street to Stanmore road, and to write to the New Brighton Borough Council to this effect. A member a<ked if it was correct that Bromley was to be rated, and mot Avon, for the Heathcote County Council's share of the cost of the new bridge over the Avon. The chairman explained that both Bromley and Avon were payiug, but as Avon had money in hand, there was no need to strike a rate in that riding. The Avon riding had money over from expenditure on Pace's road. A member: "Has Avon ever spent money on Page's roadt" He contended that if the County Council had money in hand from any riding for Page's road, that money should not be passed oo to pay toward* the bridge. It was decided to protest u> the Heathcote County Council ajrainst Broialey beics rated and not Avon. It was resolved to write to the Tramway Board asking it, that in view of the Main Highways Board re-forming and concreting Page's road, the Board straighten the tram lines in conform'ty with the alignment of the rosd particularly at the intersection of Breeze's and Fare's roads. Mr Hughes stated that it was easenual :or the Tramway Board to do this work the road vnr concreted, in order to avoid tearing up the road at a future date.
