WELLINGTON R.C.

TO-DAY'S PROGRAMME. The °< "W Meeting of the Wellington Racing OLJ> wil be opened at Trentham today with-SBie following programme, the first race starting at 11.30 a.m.:—

PROSPECTS FOR TO-DAY. ISPKCIAL lO THE PBBS8.) WELLINGTON, July 9. The weather broke fine in Wellington this morning, and there ia every prospect of a continuance for to-morrow's races. The track is certain to be very heavy, more so ; than for many Winter Meetings past, and this will to a iarge extent give investors a much harder task than already presented by the high-CJaBB fields to be paraded. The lust race is timed to start at 11.32 a.m., and the timee lor the remaining races detailed above ar« as follows:—l2.l2, x 2.51, 1.31, 2.13, 2.52, 3.33, and 4.11. The opening event, the Vittoria Hurdle Handicap, will provide an interesting contest in spite of the somewhat weak field engaged. Amorist will be produced in better order than at Dunedin, and should not be handicapped by the soft ground. Fine Acre has winning form at Na»pier Park to recommend him, and Glena Bay will have a large following from the Auckland district. favouritism will probably be divided between Fine Acre, Amorist, and Glena Bay. In a well-balanced field in the Woburn Handicap, Havering, with A. E. Ellis in the saddle, will carry much public confidence. Eoi de Val and Mark Mint will also be in demand. Hurly Burly is engaged in this race, but she je an unknown quantity in heavy going, and her form will have to be awaited.

Glendowie is likely to contest the First Hack Steeplechase in preference to waiting for the big race, and if eo he will probably command a short price. Bon Aryan and Boomerday will offer most opposition to the top weight. ' Speculation will be well distributed in the Stewards' Handicap, but candidates with possibilities comprise Black Duke, Taboo, and Royal Game All the acceptors for the Wellington Steeplechase have arrived on the • scene, and Glendowie is the only unlikely starter. The field cannot be considered very hifhclass, but nevertheless they represent the best of the present day cross-country performers. The winding up tasks have found no weak points in the condition of any of the candidates, but on the other hand have not provided investors with anything outstanding to assist them. If consistency is to be followed, Kawini must attract marked attention, and Nukumai will find the going to his liking. Kadiate's prospect* must be affected to a large extent by his recent disability, but he is one of the moat promising 'chasers in the country, and provided he stands up to the task he will be on hand at the finish. Of the remainder, King's Guard, Kauri Park, and Royal Elm make strong appeal, but in their final judgment speculators will probably Belect Kawini, Nukumai. and Radiate. Another intricate problem is provided by the Trentham Hurdle Handicap. There are not likely to be any defections other than that of Bright Land. Although earlier calculations* may be upset by the changed track conditions, the possibilities of Mister Gamp, Overhaul, and Aberfeldy will receive serious consideration. Paddon has been the ruling favourite for the Whyte Memorial Handicap since the weights appeared, and is likely to maintain his position in machine operations. Singleton and Fairy Herald will also be well supported, while there is also likely to be money from j the right quarter for Merry Mint. In the concluding event, the Te Aro Handicap, Maori Boy, Merle, and Mothplane will be in most demand.
