UNEMPLOYMENT.

FREE MEALS TO BE ISSUED. Commencing to-day, free hot metk are to be given daily to aingle men willing to work Lat unable to obtain employmeat, the Evangelical and Social Council of the Church of England having established quarters for the purpoae in St. Luke's Schoolroom, corner of Manchester and Peterborough street®. The Rev. P. Revell. who is in charge of the room, has already been promised provisions sufficient to enable meals to be provided for several days. A number or ladies have offered their ;-ssistance as attendants, but more would be welcomed. Meal® will be served between 12.30 and 1.30 p.rn. on week days, and from noon till 12.30 p.m. on Sundays. CITY COUNCIL'S RELIEF SCHEME Forty men are now being; employed under the City Council's relief scheme on the various parka and reserve*, nr., seven at Buxton's Corner, three at North Parade, twelve at Woolston Park, three at Jerrold street reserve, two at Spreydon Domain, two at Elmwood Park, three at Bottle Ltke, and eight returned soldiers grubbing broom at Bromlev Cemetery and the Cemetery Reserve. Linwood. The Water Supply and Works Committee reported to the City Council last night: "At present 155 men are engaged on relief works. The works Lave been held up to some extent during (he past fortnight by wet weather. Shortage of metal supplies is limiting the works owing to the Glenmore quarry plant breaking down. Stone from this souree should, however, be available in a few days' time." At present there are some 168 men employed on jobs provided by the Waimakariri River Trust, a number having had to be put of owing to there not being sufficient work on hand to keep tbem all busy. Yesterday 24 married men and eight Fingle men were registered at the Government Labour Bureau. None was sent to work.
