TWO GREAT PICTURES.

AT CIVIC THEATRE. In offering patron 3 "The Battle of the Sexes" and "Steamboat Bill Jan." on one ! programme the management of the Civic Theatre has certainly provided a sumptuous bill of fare for this week. D. W. Griffith is a producer whose name has become a household word because of pictures directed by him in the past. Such films as ' 'The Birth of a Nation," "Intolerance," "Way Down East," "Broken Blossoms,'" etc.. have stamped D. W. Griffith as one of tfce most famous of all directors. His latest production, "The Battle of the Sexes." is a story that finds a eounterpart, unfortunately, in every community. Jean Hersholt, as the devoted yet wayward husband and father, is an actor whose work stamps him among the world's best. Phyllis Haver, as the Tamp, and Belle Bennett as the wife and mother, give portrayals that will long be remembered. Don Alrarado as the man about town and Sally O'Neil as the daughter are excellent. Few pictures seen in Christchurch have had such a capable cast. Supporting "The Battle of the Sexes" is Buster Keaton's latest comedy, "Steamboat Bill Jun." Buster Keston and Ernest Torrenee are thoroughly at home in this, their best comedy to date. A novelty as a musical interlude has been arranged fay Mr Gladstone Hill. The De Lmxe Orchestra will occupy the stage with appropriate setting and play the overturo "Raymond." In addition the De Luxe Duo, Miss Anne Stephenson and Mr Harold Prescott, will appear iu song and duet. These artists have delighted Civic audiences during the past week, and this week Miss Stepheneon will sing "Sailing the Sea of Romance," while Mr Prescott will contribute "Awake." In response to numerous requests the Duo will give the duet. "A Night in Venice."
