BEAUTIFYING RAILWAY STATIONS.

1 fO TEZ ZtMTOSfc cr ?£2c3, 5 Sir, —I noticed in Saturday's issue ] that the Hon. Sir R. Heaton Rhodes, • at lie annual meeting of t-h® Canter- . bury Horticultural Society, touched on i the question of beautifying our rail- : way station-. About wo years ago j the Railway Department had an ; article in the '"Railway Magazine ' on i this subject, and suggested launching an annual com petition tor the most , attractive stations 'similar to that held in the Old Country;. Iv is a great pity this idea has not been carried | out. as it would have been an inceu- i tivo to th-c' oration staffs. At the j time the article appeared in the '"Rail- j way Magazine"' the Papanui Beauti- j tying Association approached the De- t partment asking for permission to J beautify the approaches to the Papaj'.ui station, and for assistance in j keeping them in ord'r. Last winter the Association planted out a large number of native shrubs and went to the expense of supplying a rock edging, but it ha-s not received any assistance from the Department or the staff in keeping the plots in order, and this in spite of repeated requests. The fault seems to lie in the policy of the Department. Some of the Old Country stations are real beauty spots, and the same thing could be carried out here, if the co-operation of the railway employees "were obtained.— Yours, etc., J. STURROCK, < President, j Papanui Beautifying Association. f July 7th, 1929.
