NEW BRIGHTON NOTES.

Tides. It will be high tide on the beach this afternoon at 2.56 o'clock and in tlio river at 4.7 o'clock, and to-morrow at 3.51 p.m. and 5.3 ]>. m. respectively. Meeting of Committees. On Thursday nest the joint committees of the Borough Council, Central Progress Association, South Brighton, and North Brighton Progress Leagues, meet when matters in connexion with the purchase of the pier, building of a swimming pool, and other foreshore improvements will be discussed. Matters in connexion with the concreting of Page's road, the building of the new bridge, and relating to the personnel of the Fire Brigade are to be considered at the meeting of the Borough Council on Monday nest. School Committee. The Central School Committee met on Wednesday, Mr W. Dean presiding. The Education Board advised that clay for the ground would be supplied, also two new tables for the classroom. The VV.E.A. was given the use of a classroom at a rental of £2 2s per annum. A te egram was re> eived from Mr D. G. Sullivan, M.P., stating that as yet no decision had been arrived at by the Cabinet, regarding the purchase of more land for the school. The headmaster reported that owing to the broken weather, and the prevalence of colds, the attendance was less than 90 per cent, of the roll number. Miss Petrie had resumed duty. It waa reported that repairs were needed to the South Brighton School grounds. Boy Scouts. At the meeting of the Committee of tho local Boy Scouts, Mr It. Bargrove presided. The Acting-Commissioner (Major W G. Furby) gave a short address. As the scout-room in the domain was proving too small, it was agreed to obtain better accommodation. It was agreed to merge the existing troop into one, under Scoutmasters C. C. March, and S. Diehl, and Assistant Scoutmasters C. Stokes, J. Gott, and W. Whiteley. It was agreed to commence practice in preparation for the anniversary parade in August next. Progress League. At a meeting of the Committee of the New Brighton Greater Progress League, on Thursday, Mr R. E. Hoiloway presided. A letter was received from the Tramway Board, stating that the reduction of tram fares was receiving consideration. It was agreed to hold a general meeting of the Association on July 17th. Croquet Club. At the annual meeting of the New Brighton Croquet Club, Mrs O. Luxton presided. The report and balance-Bheet, which were adopted, showed that the Club was in a better financial position than at any time since its inception The election of officers resulted aa follows: —Patron, Mrs A. W. Owles; president, Mrs O. Luxton; viee-president, Mrs W. Cooke; secretary and treasurer, Mrs P. Blunt; committee: Mesdames F. Ward, B. Smith, and Miss Mazey; delegate to Centre, Mrs F. Blunt. At the Flag Afternoon held in the Parish Hall, in aid of the Club funds, the prize-winners were Mesdames Cramp, Clark, White, Petrie, and Bonnington. Afternoon tea was served by the members of the committee.

8.A.0.8. Under the patronage of the Mayor and Councillors the 8.A.0.8, Lodge No. 6163, is holding a mpnster dance and social in Joyland Theatre in the near future in aid of the local unemployed fund. Earthquake Belief Fund. So far £24 3s lsd has been received by the Town Clerk in aid of the earthquake relief fund. Of this amount the school children contributed £4 16s, and the school staff £4 4s 6d. Golden Wedding. Mr and Mrs John Hunt, of Hawlie street, who have resided in New Brighton for the past 36 years, yesterday celebrated the 50th anniversary of their wedding. Mr and Mrs Hunt were the recipients of many beautiful presents and received numerous letters and telegrams of congratulate including a cable message from Hangchow, China, from their niece, Nurse Violet Bargrove. North Beaca School. The result of the primary schools' junio- light-weight football competition is ample proof of the need for a football ground for the boys school. There is some reaiiy good material, but, owing chiefly to want of practice, the team has only won two games of the six they have played. At present Normal School is leading in the competition with 11 ,points, while Nor J 'i Beach is eighth with 4 points, having scored 14 points and had 43 scored against them. Strenuous efforts are being made by the committee to make a football ground, and for ti-is purpose a series of working bees is ing held. It was decided by the committee at its last meeting to organise a bumper working bee for the second Saturday in August. School Committee. A meeting of the School Committee j was held in the school, when there were present: Messrs E. A. M. Leaver (chairman), R. Parker (secretary), A. H. Henry, D. C. Manson, A. Floranee, H. R. Davison, S. W. Brown, and Mrs Goring. The headmaster reported that the roll number was 254, while the average attendance was 223. Messrs K. Parker, D. C. Manson, and W. Brown were appointed a sub-committee to make final arrangements for the "send-off" lo Mrs Hodgson, the infant mistress. Mr A. Floranee reported on the work done by the working bee. It was decided to apply to the Department for a subsidy on the gift of books to the library recently reported. It was further reported that the library had been further augmented. Music. A North Beach amateur orchestra is being organised by Mr T. Dalton, who for many years was a prominent trombonist connected with the Theatre Royal. The first practice was held in the Memorial Hall on Tuesday evening. It is hoped to augment t; j instrumentation before the next practice, and any resiaents of North ih interested in orchestral work are cordially invited to join up. Personal. The Rev. W. F. Knowles, —ho has been seriously ill, is now convalescent, thougi. still confined to his home. Mrs E. -.f L -er, of Osborne terrace, is dangerously ill. Mr Bussell, proprietor of the InterCity Bus Service, is seriously ill. Mrs Coe, of Bowhill road, .a3 been very ill, but now is recovering. Card Match. The annual euchre match between Mairehan and Bouth Brighton was piaved last Wednesday evening in the South Brighton Hall. There was a very large attendance from both districts. South Brighton defeated the visitors. Mr W. J. Walter spoke of the goodwill caused through the matches, and Mr J. Orsborn responded. After supper dancing was indulged in. the music being provided by Mr G. Brooks and Mr J. Chegwin. Miss Millicent Grammer played an extra.
