SELECTOR STOOD DOWN.

RUGBY UNION'S DECISION. A' & meeti~£ of the Ocmmit:ee oi the Canterbury Ilugby Union on '"uesaa;-" night it vac decided to debar Mr Yates, a Senior B Grade selector, frcm holding an official position in the Union tor the remainder of the season. This action was decided upon as a result of a letter from a re f eree in one of Saturday's matches. J£r K. T. Bailey, referee in the Linwood v. Merivaio match, wrote as follows: —"I wish to bring before the notice of your Union an incident that occurred in connexion with the Linwood-MeriTa'.e Senior B mat<-h. played at Woolston to-day. A few minutes before no-side was sounded, I had occasion to penalise a Linwood player for w'lfullv remaining within ten yards of an opponent waiting for the ball. The coach of the Linwood team made protests from the side-line. The kick was taken, and as I was in doubt I consulted the touch judges, one or whom was a Linwood player. Both stated a goal. I blew my whistle, and awarded a goal. This was the only score of the game. The Linwcod coach was loud in his protests. Almost immediately after the game was re-started the ball went into touch and co-side was sounded. As we walked off the ground this coach was referring to the ■ referee, and making othT objectionable remarks. I warned him •hat !£ he persisted I would report him to ihe Unioa. He replied: -You should read thu r«les. lam a selector of the Union ; to which 1 replied, 'A very poor example of a selector.' I then requested his name. He replied. 'What's that to do with yout T ascertained that his name -,-as Gates, or a somewhat similar name, and i'hat he was a Senior B selector." 'Both Mr Bailey and Mr Yates attended tb \i?T Ff'Wltaon moved that Mr Yates be debarred from taking any official P™t'°° or acting in any official capacity in the Rugby Union for twelve months. At 3 o'clock Thistle seniors will take the field arainst Nomads in the last match cf the first round for the Hurley Shield, and as there Is only one point between them n the championship table the game should pronde a great number of thrills. In the early stages of this reason Ncmads j were defeated by Western, but they have j been materially strengthened since then and j have not lost a match since, whilst Thistle had to be satisfied with a draw against Racgsr. ia a reoent match at Lnrliih Park. With both teams right out after the points . a great game should ensue. j
