HANMER SPRINGS. The Hanmer football team motored vo Kaikoura on Saturday to play in the junior competition, and won by 18 points to 14. • The golf club played a flag match during the week-end. The winner was Mr F. K. Lumsden, who carried his flag to the 18th hole. G. Reid was second, carrying his fiag to the 18th fairway. Mr J. Hanson's trophy for an annual bogey handicap has taken the form of a handsome challenge cup to be known as the Lodge Challenge Cup. B. M. Neilson is the first winner. A replica of the cup will be presented to the winner each year. The sub-committee appointed by the Management Committee of the Golf Club, consisting of the chairman (Mr J. Manson), Dr. Lumsden. Messrs F. Coote, R. F. McKay, and the secretary made an inspection of the Domain end various blocks of land in the vicinity for the purpose of extending the links They will meet the members ot the. Domain Board during ths coming week-end and will then report to the committee.

The Ladies' Hockey Club held a practice match last Saturday with the view of picking players to compete in future district competitions. The chairman of lite Amuri County Council, Mr M. Bethell. with the County Engineer and Crs. Rutherford and Atkinson made an inspection of the township area list Thursday for the purpose of deciding on the work to be undertaken during the winter. Mr Linton Gardiner and family are here for the term holidays, having taken Mrs Kitto's house. Miss M. Fawcett has returned to Harnner after six months *pent with Mrs Mathieson at Culverden.

WAIKARI. At the fortnightly meeting oi' the Waikari 1.0.0. F., M.U., Bro. E. Trounce, N.G., presided. Two new members were initiated into the lodge. Xomiaations of officers for the coming term were taken. After the meeting a dainty supper was served.

I SCARGILL. j Alter nearly forty years' continuous residence in the Motunau district, Mr I end Mrs G. G. Greig hare disposed of | their property and gone to live in retirement in Christchureh. Prior to their departure they were entertained by Motunau and Scargill residents at a social gathering in the SeargjJl Hall. Mr T. B. L. Roberts presided, and there was an interesting programme of musical and elocutionary items, and community singing. The chairman in a speech reminiscent of the early days of the district when Mr Greig's late father first took up property there and ¥ r » . alKl later, Mrs Greig, came to live in Scargill, referred to their neighbourly qualities and the very high esteem in which they were held. Mr E. A. Foster expressed regret at losing good neighbours. Mr E. Gardner also spoke, and Mr Roberts then presented Mr and Mrs Greig with a dinner service on behalf of the residents, bidding them farewell and wishing them long life, health, and happiness to enjoy what they had earned. Mr Greig in responding, thanked the residents for their parting gift, and also related *>arlv incidents in the district's history. After cupper dancing was indulged in until an early hour.

WAIPARA. A good rain fell last week, when 76 points were recorded, and although it will hang up the drilling of wheat crops it will do a lot of good to green feed and pastures in general. Stock is looking well, thanks to a generous amount of moisture during the autumn months. Some good paddocks of green oats and grass .are to be seen about the district. The Mothers' Union held a gift afternoon in aid of St. Anne's Guild at the Glenmark vicarage on Thursday afternoon, when there was a good attendance. A large number of parcels were received. It was decided to hold a garden party and sale of work during the year.

CUST. Mothers Day was held during the week-end in. St. David's Presbyterian Church. On Saturday the members of the Bible Class invited their mothers to meet with them, and after Bible study supper wa« served. Mrs Waviand expressed the pleasure the mothers felt in bem K present and their interest in the class. WOODEND. Special services were held on Sunday in celebration of the anniversary of the Methodist Church. The Rev. F. B. Lawrence, of Wuolston, conducted the morning service and preached to a fairly large congregation. An anthem was given by the ehobr, also a quartet "All in the April Evening,'' by Mi&s A. Griffiths, Mrs A. Smith. Messrs L. Sheppard, and W. Nelson. The evening service was taken by the Rev. J. R. Nelson. Anthems by the choir and a solo, "Thanksgiving." by Mr W.
