UNEMPLOYMENT.
STREET RECONSTRUCTION WORKS. MBN BEING PUT ON TO-DAY, The meeting of the Works Committee of the City Council held on Saturday morning, to consider the works to be put in hand in connexion with the acceptance of the Government's offer of £25,000, was fully attended. It was decided to out in hand certain street reconstruction works. To facilitate the supervision of the work and for the convenience of the men to be employed, the streets to be reconstructed have been grouped. It has been ascertained as tar as possible that no trenching is contemplated in the streets to be reconstructed. On the recommendation of the City Engineer (Mr A. R. Gaibraith), it was arranged that a start should be made with work on a number of streets in Spreydon and Papanui. In Spreydon work was to be put in hand immediately in Lyttdton, Frankleigh, and Rose streets, to be followed liter by work in Howard, Simeon, Jerrold, Collins, nntl Selwyn streets, and Park road. In Papanui, the first work to be put in hand will be in Grant's road. Proctor street, Mary street, and Bligh's road. Work will also be started almost immediately in Malvern, Westminister, and Somme streets, Hawkesbury avenue and Innes, Brett's and May's roads, St. Albans. The old rates of pay are to be paid: 16s 4d per day for road work, and 14s for gardener's work. The men will be selected by officers of the Labour Department. As customary, it is proposed to give preference to married men with dependents, who are citisens of Christchurch, and who can prove that they have resided in the City for six months.
It is hoped to start a few men today and in the course of a few days to have 50 men employed. It has been arranged that 40 men are to be employed on the City reserves, in addition to the number given work under the City Engineer. At the Labour Bureau on Saturday six married men and five single men registered. Eight men were sent to work on the wharves at Lyttelton, and ten were selected for forestry work at "Eyrewell. and eight for publio works at Scargill.
Forestry Work. During this week the State Forest Service will find work for an additional 82 men at the Eyrewell plantation area, if the necessary tent accommodation is forthcoming from the contractors. This will make the total 127. Twelve men are to leave to-day, and the remaining 70 as soon as the tents are available, which will be, it is hoped, during the present week. SUBSIDY PROMISED. (PBSSS ASSOCttttOK TSLSOaAIf.) PALMEKSTCXN NORTH, May IS. Sir Joseph Ward informed the Mayor on Saturday that the Government was willing to subsidise up to £IOOO drainage work contemplated in the district to help in the relief of unemployment in Palmerston North.
