DEGREE DAY.

MANY GRADUATES. AN ORDERLY GATHERING. TLe Graduation ceremony at Canterbury College yesterday afternoon was an orderly gathering. Admission was by ticket, and not many undergraduates were present. Those who were, becoming tired, after a time, of kepeing silent, struck up ao original chorus now and then or fired an occasional interjection. Colonel G. J. Smith, M.L.C., chairman of the Canterbury College Board of Governors, presided, and there were also on the platform, members of the Board of Oovemors, the Professorial Board, Canterbury M.P.'s, and members of the Legislative Council. Colonel Smith referred to the presence on the platform of Dr. H. D. A. Major, of Ripon Hall, Oxford, who, said the speaker, was proud to call himself half a New Zealander, and of Dr. Lawson, Professor of Education at Otago University, who was to deliver the address.

'' Graduates and undergraduates (Cheers) will be pleased to hear that this ceremony has been restored in all its ancient form .a-nd glory," added Colonel Smith. "I think it was stopped because some of our undergraduate friends (ironical cheers) did not always keep quite within bounds.'* (Cries of dissent.) He congratulated the graduates of the year. "The undergraduates, I am sure, rejoice with you In your success," he added, but this the undergraduates present strenuously denied.

The Rector (Dr. J. Hight) as DeputyChancellor then conferred the degrees, the graduands being invested with the hoods proper to their respective degrees. Many of them were the butt Of their friends at the back, as they stepped forward. Solicitous enquiries were made of one as to whether he was still a misogynist, and .another if he had sown his wild oats. When the engineering students came to be capped the audience was informed that "This is a real degree." Scraps out Of the student revue relating to the "Municipal cow," and "conveniences" seemed as if they were sung for the special benefit of the Mayor, who was on the platform. "Jump, you little devils, jump!"—another revue number—also received a good hearing. "Now we have a real man," exclaimed the undergraduates as Professor Shelley stepped forward to read the names of the graduands in the social sciences.

"Mr Chairman, Ladies and Gentlemen," began Dr. Lawson, in his address. "Andungraduates," chimed in the students. "I thought they were included in the 'gentlemen,' " observed the Professor amid laughter. Later he made the point that students, in order to get a broad outlook on life should have more free time. "And free beer," #dded the students enthusiastically. "I don't know about that," said the speaker. "I am only speaking of spirit." Later in his address Dr. Lawson was informed that afternoon tea w.is ready, that "Percy" waß snoring, and that "Dr. Farr can see a star." He asked to be allowed to finish, but was told soon after that that supper was ready, the undergraduates enquiring "if this was the bedtime story." "Would you like your breakfast in bed?" they interjected. "Yes, I would be very glad—at your expense," retorted the speaker. "Do you go by electricity or steamf they wanted to know, soon after. "By neither, by hot air!" ventured one of their fellows.
