A most serious fire in the regional area of Shanghai broke out at Hanchow yesterday, 80 miles from this city, resulting in the complete destruction of more than 500 buildings. The damage is estimated at several million dollars. Thousands of people are homeless and several of the most important buildings have been destroyed, including schools, the hospital temple, and a number of ancient landmarks and pagodas, the former Manchu Palace. Thousands of Chinese stampeded, resulting in a number of fatal accidents, though the total number killed or burned to death is uncertain at present. —Australian Press Association.
