SINGLE TRACKS.
REMOVAL TOO COSTLY. TRAMWAY BOARD'S DECISION. There are about 25 miles of single tramway track in the Christchurch system which are laid on the side of the road. This means that when cars are travelling in one direction they are not on the side of the road which is usually regarded by road users as the correct side. The Works and Traffic Committee reported to yesterady's Tramway Bonrd meeting that from time to time criticisms ha-d been made with respect to this matter. The committee wished it to be known that the reason why the single tracks were placed at the side of the road when first constructed was to prepare for the possibility of an early duplication of the track. Owing, however, to the change which hnd taken place with regard to transport, there was little possibility of double tracks being extended to any great extent. To move the single tracks, however, into the centre of the road would cost £145 OCO, and the committee felt quite certain that, under the circumstances, this heavy expenditure would not lie justified. The report was adopted.
