COUNTY COUNCILS.

MOUNT HERBERT. The monthly meeting of the Mt. Herbert County Council took place on Friday in the Comuoil Chambers, Purau. Present — Messrs C. I. Richfield (chairman), B. W. Coop, Robt. Anderson, B. Gebbie, and J. F. Tapley. A letter was received from the Agricultural Department, Wellington, wishing to be informed whether the Council was in favour of having Californian thistle removed from the list of noxious weeds. It was resolved that a reply be forwarded that the Council was against removal so far as the county was concerned. The Minister for Internal Affairs wrote regarding the subdivisions within the county. The Council considered that advice might be valuable at Governor's Bay, as much cutting up of land is now taking place, and that expert advice might be of value. Mr A. R. Fleming wrote wishing to be informed whether the road leading up Mr B. J. FlemJßg's gully was ever taken over by the Council. Mr E. W. Coop was appointed: to see Mr Fleming and supply the necessary information.

The chairman stated that the crusher had completed the crushing in Port Levy and would proceed to Purau Hill and break about 200 yards there, which would complete the metalling on that road. The crusher had crushed about 2200 yards altogether in the Port Levy riding since it commenced work in the riding. The chairman remarked as this wag the last meeting of the Council before the election of a new Council he wished to thank the members for their support during the past year, which he might say had been a very pleasant year. The Council would come out with a credit balance. He also thanked the clerk for assistance that he had at all times rendered to him. The members reciprocated and the meeting closed.

ASHLEY. The Ashley County Council met on Thursday last. Present: Crs. D. R. Hutchison (chairman), Bennett, McCracken, Pulley, and O'Halloran. A letter of sympathy with Mr Metherall in his recent bereavement was authorised. The appointment of Mr James Gibson as chief roadman was approved. ,*% i"." 8 decided to support the retention of Californian thistle as a noxious weed, subject to action by the Government in eradicating it from State reserves and Crown lands. _ Mrs Fitzsimmons wrote asking. that attention be given to the Orahaki Reserve road. The chairman and Cr. McCracken were asked to inspect the road.

■Mr _ Niemann, contractor, interviewed the Council and made arrangements for taking up the Gorge road Bhingling, which had been given up through lack of suitable material. The_ chairman was asked to represent the Council at the conference for the acknowledsment of services of the Hon. Mr Buddo. The tender of Mr H. Sinclair was accepted for fencing the Council's land near the Garry bridge.

Four close tenders were received for the maintenance of a portion of Dobson's road, and that of Mr W. Brown at £6O a year was accepted.
