Christchureb lias been fortunately free of fires and explosions from underground electric cables. Very considerable damage has resulted from this cause in Auckland, where there have been 40 cable fires in the past vear. An officer of the Municipal Electricity Department said yesterday that most of the fires occurred when a fault or break occurred in a cable and the msu lating material ignited.
