TIMBER STRIKE.
FURTHER BRUTAL ASSAULTS. POLICE VICTORY OVER GANG. (Tiamuj PIEBB A.BSOCIATIOH BT BLBCTBIO telegraph— coexa,'.aar.) SYDNEY, May 4. Further brutal assaults on the loyal timber workers in the past few days have swelled the total of those attacked *° 49. Last night in a savage assault at Petersham, two men were knocked to the ground and kicked in the face and on the head and body. Their assailants made off in a waiting car. The men were taken to hospital covered with blood and suffering from concussion. A fight occurred at Newtown when police and detectives went to the assistance of a timber worker who was being attacked by strikers and their sympathisers. The police, who were furnishing protection to the workers in the timber yards, noticed that the men were acting suspiciously and, believing that they were members of a gang engaged in assaulting workers, summoned aid by wireless. When a sudden rush was made on the defenceless workers, police and reserves swooped down on the attackers, and a melee followed in which one constable was injured. The police were victorious and two men were arrested. Mr Corke, secretary of the Timber Merchants' Association, replying to a statement by Mr Kavanagh, chairman of the Labour Council Disputes Committee, that the committee was taking no notice of the assaults, declares that the attacks on volunteer workers are organised. Mr Corke stated that the timber merchants will not meet Messrs Garden, Kavanagh, and Reeves, leaders of the Disputes Committee, in conference. —Australian Press Association.
