TIMARU.

PERSONAL. Mr T. O. Fox, Borough Engineer, is expected to return to Timaru from Christ-church to-day. Mr W. Hartley, stationmaster at Oamaru, is at present relieving Mr A. E. Firman, stationmaster at Timaru, who is off duty on account of ill-health. Prior to his retirement as engineer and manager of the Timaru Gas Co., Ltd., after 35 years' service, Mr W. A. Courtis was met by the employees of the company and presented with a silver cigar case suitably inscribed, together with a box of cigars. Mr J. P. Newman, chairman of the company, in making the presentation, referred to the valuable services rendered to the company by Mr Courtis, and hoped that he would enjoy many years of good health during his retirement. Mr F. F. Neale, secretary, and Mr A. M. Taylor, present engineer and manager, also spoke. Mr Courtis suitably replied. Probate Granted. His Honour Mr Justice Adams has granted probate in the following deceased South Canterbury estates:— Richard Hughes, Christina Albes, John Brown, Mary Boyd, Walter William Lane, George Callender, and Alexander McKenzie. Magistrate's Court. At the Magistrate "s Court on Saturday, before Mr A. L. Gee, J.P., Percy Edward Lewis was charged with, on April 26th at St. Andrews, stealing 40 sacks valued at £2 6s, the property of Archibald Lambie. Francis Thomas Durran and Percy Edward Lewis were jointly charged (1) with, on April 16th at St. Andrews, stealing five sacks of wool valued at £lO, the property of John Houston Blue, and (2) with, on April 19th at St. Andrews, stealing 100 sacks valued at £3 los, the property of James ' Packer.

On the application of Sergeant Petersen accused were remanded till Wednesday next, bail being allowed to each accused in a sum of £IOO, with one surety of a similar amount.

There «as a large attendance at Fraser Park on Saturday afternoon, when the South Canterbury '.Rugby Union's competition was continued in ideal weather. On the No. 1 ground Temuka won the toss, and Celtic kicked off with a blinding sun in their eyes. Temuka were quickly on the offensive, and their forwards broke away in a promising rush, but Delury saved with a good line kick. Temuka were then defending for some time until Fountain broke through and passed to B. Walker, who scored Celtic's only try. Fountain failed with a difficult kick. Temuka retaliated, however, and their forwards took the play to Celtic's twenty-five, where their backs combined well in a passing movement which resulted in Priestly scoring in a good position. Strang converted. After the commencement of the second spell Temuka attacked strongly. Strang marked in a good position, but failed to kick s goal. From a scrum near Celtic's line Temuka hooked the ball, and Strang gathered up smartly and passed to G. Gaffaney, who scored. Strang failed to convert. The Temnka backs settled down and combined well, and a passing rush from half-way resulted in Priestly finishing off with a spectacular try, which Strang converted. Temuka again had Celtic on the defensive. G. Gaffaney marked in a good position and kicked a goal. In the latter stages of the game Celtic were on the verge of scoring several times, but they failed to finish off their movement, and the game ended with the scores: Temuka 16, Celtic 3. On the No. 2 ground Zingari 8 defeated Star 6 in an interesting game. After a spell of fairly even play, Star swept down the field to Zingari's twenty-flve, where from a scrum C. Browne got across at the corner. Roddick's kick failed. Several counter-attacking movements followed till Fairbrother scored and converted for Zingari. Star attacked hotly in the second half, and a determined Rtruegle in Zingari's twenty-five resulted in Macintosh forcing his way over in the corner. The kick failed. Star was unlucky in not being able to score in the later stages of the game, which ended: Zingari 8. Star 6. Golf. A social evening -was held in the Geraldine Methodist Church on Tuesday to mark the occasion of the approaching marriage of Mr Roy Neutze and Miss Haze! Cooke, both prominent workers in connexion with the Methodist congregation. The Rev. J. Southern was in the chair, and paid a high tribute to the good qualities possessed by their guests, and to the splendid work they had done on behalf of the church. On behalf of the congregation, Mr Southern then made them a presentation. Other speeches of a complimentary nature were made and Mr Neutze replied on behalf of Miss Cooke and himself.

The combined Golf and Tennis Club's bail took place in the Geraldine Town Hall on Thursday night. The hall was prettily decorated -with autumn foliage. About 70 couples occupied the floor, and excellent dance music was supplied by Mrs Mansell's Orchestra. Supper was arranged for by the oommittee, and the whole arrangements were successfully carried out by the joint secretaries, Miss Kennedy " and Mr Alan Macdonald, and their willing helpers.
