CUP WON BY EVENING. 1 TRIPAWAY WINS FLYING HANDICAP. li-; Oamniu Jockey Club experienced ideal weather for :t« Winter Meeting held on Saturday, and the track was in eplendid order after recent rain. The attendance was the largest enjoyed by the club for some time past, visitors being present in largj nurnfceia from northern and southsra districts. WuU-SIIk.I fields were i-araded with a reßult tha'. two dividends were attached to tha eight events on stiie programme. The racing throughout was very interesting, and some exciting finishes were witneesea. The priueipai event, the Winter Cup, attracted nino contestants and the victory secured by Evening was popula:- by reason of the fact that she was the public choice and that she rewarded her new owner, Mis* ('. Thompson, o: Du.nedai, with her iirat eucctssi. Evening has proved heisei: a consistent peWormer during the past six months and was not long in returning some of her purchase money to Miss Thompson, who bought her from F. P. (.Taridge a few days prior to the recent Amberley Meeting. After the race the president of the club, lir W. Gardiner, who viewed tho racing from his car in tho enclosure, presented Miss Thompson with the Queen's Hotel Cup attached to the stake, given by M.-ssrs J. Carter and J. G. Macdonald. This cup was contested for at the club's meeting in March and as Royal Saxon and Thorndale ran a dead heat in the event carded for its possession the two owners n.tnied decided to hand it back to ih3 dub lor Saturday's meeting. The totalisator did brisk business throughout the afternoon, the sum of £13,678 10s being handled, a? against £10,475 for the March Meeting. The last fixture held in May was in 1925, when £9149 was recorded for the seven galloping races decided. Troilus was made a very short-priced favourite for the opening event, the Pacific Hurdles Handicap, and recorded a comfortable win. He allowed Goldtown and Antrim Boy to lead the field until three furlonits from home, where he passed them and led to the last fence from Goldtown and Antrim Boy. He hit the obstacle hard, but, making a speedy recovery, was not at all troubled in the run to th« post to win by five lengths from Goldtown. with a similar break to Antrim Boy. Gaybird was neat, clear of Kaikahu, with Te Maui tailed off. The winner outclassed the opposition and had the race in hand a long way from home. Both Goldtown and Antrim Boy were in diitress before the last fence waa reached. Gaybird msds a promising showing and will improve with rteinjr. Kaikehu w»* diaappoietinj, and never threnteaed dagger. Trial Stake* Twelve ptrsded for the Trial Stakes. Bemindful, ridden by t. 3. Ellis, being made a good favourite in a modem* field, but •he failed to m»ke food. Meitui was the first aut frum Best Polirr and I.srkaway. and led >ato the from Best Policy,

Kiloff and Remindful. Meitui was challenged in turn by Best Policy and Miss Nightraid in the run home, but held her advantage to heat Miss Nightraid by a length, with Best Policy a head away, and a length in front of Kiloff. with a bunch following, headed by Rhondda. Meitui is a three-year-old ftliy by Tractor from Marianne, and races in the same colours as her sister. Wingatui. The two-year-old. Miss Nightraid, who was making her fourth appearance in public, was not well placed early, and came from a good way back to gain second money. Best Pofic-r is a three-year-old gelding by Thurnham "from Honesty. Rid, like others of his breed, will improve with sge. Evening's Attractive Effort. Beau Geste and Countersign were withdrawn from the Winter Cup Handicap, which provided a poo! totalling over £2OOO. Evening and Royal Saxon were heavily supported, the former finishing up a hundred and forty ticket better favourite. Gay Sonnet shot to the front as soon as the field was released, and led to the back stretch from Wingatui, Money Mine, and Evening. Buoyant moved up into second place approaching the far turn but retired at the three furlong post and Evening supplanted him. Gay Sonnet had a clear advantage from Evening. Money Mine, Buoyant, and Royal Saxon as the straight was entered, but soon submitted to a challenge by Evening, who went on to win in impressive style by over a length from Money Mine. The latter collared Gay Sonnet over the final stages and beat her by a like margin for second money. Royal Saxon was next, closely followed" by Buoyant. Martis. Wingatui, Tardy, and Amor Snishe-d in that order. Evening's task was a comparatively easyone, and she was ridden a good race by 1,. J. Ellis, who thus soon re-entered the winning list after his compulsory absence from the saddle. Evening's form was infinitely better than she showed at Amberley, and that race evidently did her a lot of good. Money Mine (lid not have an uninterrupted passage, as he went back from third place to a rear position early in the race, and was second to last two furlongs from home. His effort in gaining second money was thus meritorious under the circumstances. Gay Sonnet made an endeavour to win from end to end. and looked to have good prospects at the home turn, but was a beaten mare at the distance. Buoyant was not well favoured in the running, but nevertheless failed to run up to expectations, while Amor again shoxved that he has lost all form and deserves ' the respite awaiting him on his return to Riccarton.

Favourite Disappoints. > There were twenty-one starters ir. the > Oamaru Trot Handicap, the defections in- j eluding the two-year-old Grand Canyon. In | a total pool of slightly over £2OOO Last i Pointer was made an outstanding favourite. I carrying six hundred tickets more than were ! entrusted to the second choice. Lough Neagh. Last Pointer was prominent for the first j couple of furlongs, but, gradually drified out of the contest. Pando Pointer, Wild ! Bingen, and Lough Neagh were the early j leaders, and the first-named led along the I back End into the f-traight from Red Shiner and Le Thorpe. This trio engaged in an exciting finish from the distance, and crossed the line together. Lough Neagh gaining the verdict by a neck from Le Thorpe, with a similar margin to Red Shiner. Wild Bingen and Monopole headed the remainder. Monopole broke going out of the straight the first time, bat made up a lot of ground in the back stretch, and was within reach of the leaders entering the straight, only to die out in the run home. A Surprise Victory. l.t a fairly even betting race Waving Corn was made a less than even money favourite for tho Flying Handicap, but her supporters had to be content with a small Becond return. Meadow Lark was the first to show out from the start, but rounding the far turn Arrowmir and Waving Corn took charge and were together entering the straight from First Raid, Royal Tractor, and Tripaway. V/aving Corn shook off Arrowmir when headed for home and was proclaimed the winner, but over the business stages Tripaway put in a powerful run from the middle of the field, and wore down the favourite in the last few strides to gain victory by three-auarters of a length. First Raid also finished strongly and was only a head away from Waving Corn at the post. Meadow Lark, Arrowmir, and Royal Tractor were next, with Winsome Boy last. The success of Tripaway was full of merit, as she gave Waving Corn an appreciable advantage into the straight. First Raid showed promising form, and will do better later. Meadow Lark was in want of a race, while Arrowmir again cracked up after having every chance. Winsome Boy's rider lost his irons at the start and the gelding tailed the field throughout. A Promising Galloper. The public were correct in their judgment in the Hack Handicap, the favourite. Night Effort, recording a somewhat easy win. Solgele took charge shortly after the start and led into the straight from Night Effort, Killorna, and Miss Marco. Solgele was. in -trouble at the distance, and Night Effort shot to the front. Miss Marco, hard ridden from the top of the straight, headed Solgele a hundred yards from the post but was unable to make much impression on Night Effort, who had a clear length's advantage at the post. Solgele weakened into third place three lengths away, and the next to finish were Killorna and Knritane, the remainder being strung out, with Poetess last. Night Effort recorded a similar victory at Waimate in March, and is the makings of a useful four-year-old. A good price was recently refused for her. Solgele had every opportunity, but was done with at the end of five furlongs. Amourette and Sea Raid ran badly, the former being near the rear of the field throughout, while Sea Raid failed to make any showing over the last furlong. An Overdue Success. Routine was installed a hundred ticket better favourite than Awa-iti in the Waikaura Trot Handicap, and secured the honours after a close finish. Knowledge, Imperial Logan, and Routine were in the van shortly after the dispatch and piloted the field to the back stretch. Emulight made a forward move at the five furlong post and took charge from Imperial Logan, Pretty Pointer, and Routine, the last-named breaking at this point and losing ground. There was little change to the straight, but at the distance Emulight retired and left Pretty Pointer in command. Routine finished on resolutely in the run home, and he and Pretty Pointer engaged in a stirring tussle, the favourite squeering home by a head margin. Emulight was three lengths back, with a similar gap to Imperial Logan and Return Voyage. The sftcond favourite, Awo-iti, failed to settle down over the first furlong and was never within reach of the leaders. Favourite Wins. The public finished up the day well by making Royal Saxon favourite for the Farewell Handicap. His effort in the Cup evidently benefited him, as he had the race won at the top of the straight. Waterlow acted as pacemaker after the field were on their way and led into the straight with a slight advantage from Royal Saxon, Wayward, Winsome Boy, and Paper Boy. Waterlow had enough commencing the final run, leaving Royal Saxon in charge, and although the latter had to be kept up to his work to stave off a belated challenge by Paper Boy, he had a length's advantage as the line was crossed. Winsome Boy was half a length away, followed by Tripaway, Wayward, and Miss Marco. Royal Saxon won impressively and v.'ii \ win more races where long journeys are nut j involved. Paper Boy seemed unable to ■ get up to the field in the early part, r.nd i was a long way from Royal Saxon turning for home. He put in a powerful finishing run and had the winner doing his best. Winsome Boy ran a satisfactory race and only surrendered second place in the last couple of strides. Both Money Mine and Tripaway were expected to do better after their good showings earlier in the day. • Waterlow had every chance out in front, but stopped quickly when headed for the post. Wayward, now trained by the Trilford brothers. was prominent for a good part of the journey, and appears to be on the improve.
