OPAWA NOTES.

Personal. The friends cf Captain B. B. Irwin, Opawa road, who has been confined to Lewishain Hospital, will be glad to know he is making favourable progress. Children's Playground. At a special meeting of the Opawa School committee, the site for the playground equipment was chosen. The work of erecting the equipment commenced on Thursday. There were present: Messrs T. W. West (chairman), J. H. Hepburn, L. J. Knowles, T. W. Walton, W. A. Schenkel, J. E. Baker, and W. P. G. Ingley (secretary). Church Anniversary. Despite inclement weather, there was a large congregation at the breakfast in celebration of the 69th anniversary of StJ Mark's, Opawa. The breakfast was prepared by the ladies of the parish. Parishioners Meeting. The annual meeting of parishioners of St. Mark's Church was held on Tuesday evening, the Rev. H. Williams presiding over a good attendance. The balance-sheet, presented by the Vicar's warden, Mr H; P. Cox, showed that during the year £535 Is lid had been raised for various purposes. There was a credit balance of £1 17s 4d. The report stated that contributions to the Foreign Missions had been considerably more than usual. £220 had been raised during.the year for liquidation of loans. This was a separate account. A fresh loan of £220 had been incurred in order to connect all church pro- . perty with- the sewerage scheme. It was* intended to hold socials towards the-end of the year to clear this debt. Diocesan finance proposals, and urged strongly the fuller adoption of the envelope system. The following officers were elected: Vicar's warden, Mr F. H. Polhill; parishioners' warden, Mr J. Goddard; vestry, Dr. D. E. Hansen,. Messrs. G. Watson, N. Fussell, H. Cox, H. Fullwood, R. Wilson, H. R. Williams, G. E.

Oppen heim, A. Harrington and A. J. Canning; Mr Brydes-Jones was elected auditor.' Promises of shrubs and trees for ., beautifying the church grounds, were given to Dr. Hansen, who controls this work. Votes of thanks were passed to the lay readers, and to the Revs. H. W. Smith, P. Revell, and A. H. If orris. •

Opawa Guide Company. The annual meeting of the Opawa branch of the Girl Guides was held on Monday, Mrs B. B. Irwin, District Commissioner, presiding over a good attendance. The balance-sheet showed a credit on the year's working. The annual report, stated that there were 14 Rangers or senior Guides, 29 Guides and 14 Brownies. The following officers were elected: —Treasurer, Mrs Owen; secretory, Mrs Colin Taylor; committee, Mesdames B. B. Irwin, Owen, Haylock, Wheeler, G. Watson, Erwin, Banks, and Miss Piper (re-elected from last year's committee); the Ranger captain and Guide captain and Mesdames Maxwell, Brewer and Alexander (new members). Mrs Maxwell was chosen to represent the Opawa company on the South District Badge committee. It was decided to hold a birthday party on May 3rd to celebrate the completion of 3 year's existence of the Opawa Guide Company.

Opawa Tennis Club. Steady progress is being made with the "Opawa Tennis Club's winter competitions, the following results being available: —■ > Men's 'Handicap;- Singles (Wilding Cup): N. (owe 15 5-6) beat T. Ford 6—4, 6—l, thereby entering the bottom section of the semifinals. Men's Championship Singles: N. Brydges-Jones beat O. Tregear 6—2, 6—3; A. Franklin beat J. Sinclair 6—2, 6-r-l: N. Tregear beat K. White 5—6, Men's- Junior Championship: R. Woodward beat S. Tregear 6—2, 6—3; D. Munson beat C. Ford 6—o, 6—2. Combined Handicap Doubles: Miss K. Esson and W. S. Clayton (owe 15 3-6) beat Miss Menzies and N. Tregear (owe 40) I—6, 6—3, 6—2; Miss B. Tipping and M. Minson (owe 5-6) beat M. Butler and J. Sinclair (rec. 15 3-6) 6—3, 4 —6, 6 —5.
