RESEARCH NEEDED.
N.Z. FISHERIES. The time will come when New Zea« land will have to pay more attention to her fisheries, is the opinion of Mr A. E. Hefford. Chief Inspector of Fisheries, who has been in Christchurch for the last few days. At present very little information is available. What is wanted is a research staff with full equipment and the means of gaining the much-needed information so that progress can be made. Very little is known of the extent or productivity of the New Zealand fisheries. As New Zealand is an oceanic island it is probable that they tlu not extend very far off-shore. Good fisheries need shallow seas of great extent. Mr Findlay, in Dunedin, said Mr Hefford, was at present working for the Submarine liesearch Department, on the scale of quinnat salmon, trying to find details about their age "and aise and weight. Mr Hefford said that fishing now was 1 more expensive than jt used to be and | this was one of the reasons lor the high [price of fish.
