FAMINE IN CHINA.
AUCKLAND COUNCIL'S DONATION. [THE PSXSB By&ml l«rrtee ] AUCKLAND. March 29. A donation of 100 guineas to the Major's Fund for the relief of the famine-stricken in China was made by the City Council last night after spirited sectional opposition. The morer of the motion to make the gift .said it tu amall, but vas a gesture of friendship. "Charitv begins at home, said oa« member. ""There are men hungry in this city to-night." An amendment to hold a citisens meeting to discuss the question was defeated and the grant "was authorised.
