# Tenuis. A combined tennis tournament will be held on the Te Whaka Club's courts on Saturday afternoon for a trophy given by Mr C. D. McKenzie. Personal. Captain B. Irwin, of the s.s. Maori, left the vessel at Wellington on Tuesday to under. So an operation. In the meantime be is being relieved by Captain Preiser. Mr W. McAuliffe, manager of the Municipal Gasworks, who has been attending the Conference of Gas Engineers at Wanganui, has returned to Lyttelton. Warning to Bathers. A warning has been issned to bathers near the swimming steps at the eastern end of the Gladstone Pier, a large octopus hiring been seen in the vicinity. Yesterday very few bathers ventured into the water, bnt some doubt exists as to whether the visitant is one of the tenacled species. The .fish, which is the sise of a bicycle wheel, was seen again yesterday, and it baffled the effort* of fishermen to catch it. School Picnic • To-day the West Lyttelton School will hold its annnal picnic to the f&icearton racecourse. A unique feature of the picnic will be the fact that the children will be taken to Christchnrch by the steam train, and by the time they return the steam-engines will have been discarded in favour of the electric locomotives. ■
