Annual (two events). _ . , March 23, 25—WfiBiport J.C. Annual (two events each day). TURF GOSSIP. Fine weather Was experienced in Dunedin yesterday, and there was every indication last night of it? continuance for the Dunedin Meeting. The track, which has not been used Bince the Summer Meeting, carries a good sole of grass, and the going should be fast, but not really hard. The night goods train, which conveyed some of the Rieearton horses on Monday, reached Dunedin five hours late. The cause of this was the failure of the Railway Transport Department to notify the driver or the guard ot the train to collect the horse boxes waiting at Sockburn. The train reached Bolleston before word was dispatched to those in charge, and the engine was then sent back to Sockburn. Needle*! to say, there was strong comment on the laxity of the responsible railway officials.

Pink Note and Nightmarch have been the ruling favourites with' the public for the Dunedin Cup during the past few days, and this pair will probably hold their places on the machine. Nightmarch has not been given much long work, but his connexions are quite satisfied with his condition.

Royal Saxon, who has got through a solid preparation, will be ridden in the Dunedin Cup by P. Powell, and not, by L. J. Ellis. The latter was not available until Queen Balboa and Bilbo were withdrawn, and in the meantime Powell had been engaged. He "has .had to waste to ride at the weight, and may not be seen to advantage on such a hard puller. Nevertheless, Royal Saxon's party are very confident of success.

Wingatui track-watchers have expressed the opinion that Paperehase hat not done sufficient work to do herself justice in the Publicans' Handicap at Dunedin' to-day, but this is not correct, as she has been one of the most consistently hard workers at Riccarton during the past three weeks. If she gets beaten t®»d»y it will certainly not be for want of a Solid preparation. On the other hand, she has invariably performed better after a race. H. "Wiggins rode at New Plymouth on Saturday last, at Rotorua on Monj day, sad arrived in Dunedin l*«t 1 night. Count Cavour's recent work, both at Eiccarton and Wingatui, has brought him into the mtrket for the Dunedin Cup. in whieh he will be ridden by A. E. Ellis. A softer track, however, would be more to his liking. Full Flight, who was to have been ridden by C, Emerson in the Trial Stakes at Dunedin to-day, went lame Over the week-end and was not sent south from "Washdyke. In the nominations for the Banks Peninsula Meeting Aberfeldy's uame should be included in the Forsyth Flying Handicap and omitted from the Terawera Handicap, Avant Courier (by Vajais—Courante), who was bought when a yearling fp r 5500gns by the Melbourne sportsman Mr E. M. Pearce. has been leased for a period of two years to the trainer A. E. J. Austin, and he will be raced in Queensland. Though Avant Courier has failed to develop the form fondly hoped for, he registered at least one noteworthy feat when he defeated Trivalve in the Caulfield Guineas.

TROTTING NOTES.

Nominations for the Marlborough T.C.'s Annual Meeting clog® to-morrow, When entries for four trotting events at the Marlborough Racing Club's Meeting also fall due. Acceptances for the K&ikoura T.C.'s Annual Meeting close on Saturday at 9 p.m. The Banks Peninsula Racing Club is always assured of strong support lor light harness events on its programmes, and for its coming Meeting 73 entries were made by trotting owners. The fees derived in nominations alone mil assist the club financially, although not to the same extent as did the 103 entries made for the club's Meeting held in October, when both raoes had to be run in divisions.

Logan Chief was responsible for a pleasing effort over a mile and a quarter at Addington yesterday morning, when he easily defeated Bonny Logan. Evidently the aged gelding is ftot yet a back-number over middle distances, although a two miles journey may always prove beyond him.

Although up to the time of going to Press yesterday no sale of the pacer Maiwhanti had taken place, negotiations were again opened yesterday morning with the result that the Harold Dillon pacer was purchased by Mr G. J. Barton and goes into W. JTomkinson's stable. The Tasmanian Trotting Derby of one mile, decided on January 26th, was won by Master Ribbonwood, by Lord Ribbonwood—-Coonella in 2.29 2-5. The appearance of two women drivers —Mrs Pearl Kelly and Mrs A. A. Laid-law—-gave the Ballarat (Vio.) Club's Meeting rather a novel Gavour, says the "Australian Trotting Record." Both are accomplislxed horsewomen and in actual race-driving the former is quite a veteran, but for a long time now has met with little success. Mrs LaidlaW has been more fortunate, for almost at the inception of her career she has tasted the fruits of victory. Mrs Laidlaw drove Bazil Bells, by Bazil B. — Ruby Bells, to win the Ladies' Bracelet of 40 sovs. nine furlongs, in 2.46. The Tasmanian Trotting Club Cup, of two miles, 4.55 class, decided on February Ist, was won by Conara, a New Zealand-bred gelding, at one time trained at Riccarton by F. Holmes for Mr J. Thornton. The winner's time Was 4.49 8-5. Conara is eight years old and is by Logan Pointer from Mariaoin.

PROSPECTS FOR "TO-DAY. The Dunedin Jockey Club's Autumn Meeting will be opened at Wingstui to-day and conclude on Saturday. The fixture has aroused widespread interest owing to Aussie making a special trip from the North Island to oppose Limerick in the James Hazlett Gold Cup to be decided on Saturday. Good fields will parade to-day and the racing promises to be of an interesting nature. The programme will be carried out in the following order:—

AUTUMN HURDLE HANDICAP, of 200 £OVS. lftß.

Rangatahi ..11 2 •• 9 13 Troilus .. 10 11 Shandre .. 90 Tunamoe ..10 10 Amorist .. 90 Uuncase .. 10 8 lieisler ..90 Gayoma .. 10 0 llie class of hurdle horses at the Meeting cannot be considered strong. iCangntahi showed good form at the Oamaru and Dunedin fixtures held in December, beating many of the horses engaged to-day, and his prospects look favourable. Troilus will probably start in the President's Handicap and contest the second day's hurdle event. Lancer was unbeaten in his three attempts over the battens at the West Coast Meeting, and those performance a suggest possibilities for him even in the more powerful company he will encounter. Gayoma, who was also a winner at Dunedin has made a gradual improvement, while Tunamoe has raced fairly consistently in the far south. The stablemates, Amorist and Hei&er, do not appeal at the present jnncture. Favouritism will probably rest between Rangatahi, Lancer, and Gayoma. TRIAL STAKES, of 170 »ots. 7f. Hembo .. 8 4 Solanum 8 3 Paquito .. 8 4 Miea Marco 8 1 Umtal! .. 8 4 Rigmarole . . 7IS btarshooter .. 8 2 Night Effort 7lf Red Boa . . 8 3 Fall Flight 7 13 Salmo Salar 8 2 In a moderate field engaged in the above, the two Riecarton representatives, Paquito and Starshooter, are likely to command most attention. The former raced promisingly at Trentham, without enjoying the best of luck, and has since done well as Limerick's track companion. Starshooter's last start was in a similar event at Wingatui in October last when he filled second berth to Pound Note. He had a rough poss&Ke on that occasion and had to be spelled until a few weeks back. His recent training efforts have been very impressive and a profitable future seems to be in store for him. Another Riecarton candidate in Rigmarole 'has yet to make good, and investors will not be anxious to support her on this occasion. Full Flipht. half brother to Receipt and Battle Colours, got on to th<» winning li«t at the recent Tananui Meeting and looks an improving sort. Jt i* difficult to go past Starshooter and Paqnito to fight out the finish, and Full Flight reads the most likely of the remainder. PRESIDENT'S HANDICAP, of 375 eo*i. 1 Jm. Amor .. 9 9 Troilus 7 12 Page Boy .. 9 1 Tembronty .. 710 Arrowy .. 812 Evening .. 7 9 Tardy .. 8 9 Green Cloth .. 7 7 Toawai .. 8 6 R«yal Flower 7 7 Red Racer .. 8 0 Gayblfd .. 7 7 Amor has been very disappointing in his track essays of late, but too much notice need not be taken of this factHe is invariably a better galloper in a race, and his consistent racing at Ellerslie during the holiday period must not be overlooked. Tardy has done well during the past couple of months and won a double at Tapanui last week. Toawai is well placed with 8-<3. and on Wellington form must be seriously considered Arrowy would have to imorove considerably on his efforts in the highweight handicaps at Trentham and will not be in much detnahd. Toawa!*, Amor, and Tardy may be the beai supported. PUBLICANS' HANDICAP, of 400 io*a. 6f. Aus«ie . . 10 4 Sodden Storm 7 S Rapier 8 11 Silver Coot . . 7 4 Black Duke . . 8 7 Money Mina 1 0 Paperchase 8 5 Hoyal Tract©* T 0 N'incompoon 7 12 Hnttld Flif .« 7 0 Rin Tin Tin 7 11 Wiojcmtui . . TO Meadow Lark 71! T)anHn* l>ays 7 0 The presence of Aasaie in this field will add inteerst to the race, and his form will give a line as to his prospects of troubling Limerick on Saturday. According to reports from Wingatui he has reeled off a couple of startling gallops since going south, and even with 10.4. he will probably be sent out first choice. Rapier is well treated with 8-11 and evidently he was handicapped as a stayer only.- He is, however, a sprinter of no mean calibre when well, but not having had a race for some time he will be at a disadvantage as compared with many of the opposition. Black Duke and Papercnase will also be better for a race, but at the same ttm« the Riecarton mare shows everv promise of participating in the finish. Her Verent track work has been very encouraging, and she will be produced in splendid order. Nincompoop and Rin Tin Tin cannot be expected to be at their best, but Meadow Lark on a dry track, is deserving of consideration. Taking a lin* through her Wellington running, Sudden Storm may be seen to better advantage on the second day. Silver Coot dead-heated with Money Order in the race twelve months ago, caryring 7-3. and is a better horse to-day, but the company is more select. Nothing in the seven-stone division is likely to see out the distance, and the final issue mny be left to Aussie, Paperchase. and Meadow Lark. Tf a wet track should prevail, Rapier will be on hand at the finish.

DXJNEDIN CUP HANPICAP, of 1000 eov*. lim. Count Cavour 0 0 Beau Geste .. 7 5 Pink Note . . 8 6 ftt*r God . - 7 1 Nightmarch . . 8 0 Circulation . . 7 1 Royal Saxon 710 Prickle* .. 7 0 Papatu 7 7 Rotor .. 7 0

"With ten acceptors in the long-estab-lished Cup, there is good material for an interesting race, and it is difficult to forecast the ultimate favourite. Count Cavour's stocks have risen as a result of two attractive gallops at Riccarton. He is the proved stayer of the party, but cannot be seriously reoommended in the face of his disappointing performances this season. Pink Note has every credential to carry public confidence. His success in the race twelve months ago with a pound less on his back, and his subsequent creditable form, including a good but unlucky efiort in the Wellington Cup last month, stamp him as a most likely candidate. Nightmarch, with a Derby to his credit, is also entitled to serious thought. He has done well since the Wellington Meeting, and will not lack in the matter of condition and horsemanship. Royal Saxon's good races at Wellington point to his chances with 7-10 on his back. He certainly failed in the Wellington Cup after piloting the field for the greater part of the journey, but this was accounted for by the inability of his light pilot to keep him under restraint over the earlier stages. To-day he will have the .services of L. J. Ellis, who rode him to success on the concluding day at Trentham, and he will be capable of conserving his monnt's pace. Papatu finished a close third in the Wellington Cup. and a repetition of this form would make him dangerous. In fact he has been sorted out bv Wingatui track watchers as a sound proposition. Bean Geste has not gallorfed pleasingly in hi* work of late, and a raoe am on est weaker company would be more in his line. Nothing is known of Star God. who was sold at Trentham to an Australian buyer. Circulation is endowed with paoe and her track essays have elicited attention Sir George Clifford's representative. Prickles, can be depended upon to essay a gam* attempt, but the race seems a little beyond her capabilities, if such are to be judged on her performances this term. Rotor, on the other hand, is deserving of pass-

ing reference, as he bu been working exceptionally well sinoe returning from his startles® trip to Wellington. The distance will not cause him trouble under his light impost, and he may b* responsible for the surprise of the day. In what promises to be an tr«o betting race. Royal Saxon. Nigbtmarcb. ana Pink Note will be in keen demand.

CHAMPAGNE STAKES, of 500 ioti. St. Gold Tinge .. 9 6 Jaleux .. 8 10 Stealth .. 8 13 Pink Coat .. S 10 Blue Metal .. 8 10 Jaix Girl .. 8 7 Leading Boy 8 10

N With Dutch Money out of the way, the above classic bears an open outlook. Gold Tinge is due to make his reappearance, but his task seems severe under a big impost. Jaleux has shown his ability not onlv to gallop but to stay on, in both his track and race efforts, and will make matters interest, ing. Pink Cost will be having his second race, and there is no doubt he is a promising colt. Stealth ■seems to be the best of the southerners, and may share the honours with Jaleux and Pir.k Coat.

BERWICK HANDICAP, of 200 eoT». 7f. Sweet Refrain 9 0 Star Raid 8 6 Cupid'a Dart 8 IS Impertinence S 3 WaTlnf Corn 8 10 Star Stranjer Court Jester 8 10 11. • 0 Killorna 8 9

If Star Raid were to reproduce his track work, which at times has been outstanding, he would cause a lot of trouble to this field. He was not well favoured in his well-filled races at Wellington, and evidently one bump is sufficient to put him out of court. He should not be troubled on this score to-day, and his task looks hopeful. Two other Riecarton candidates in Court Jester and Impertinence will also solicit support.

STEWARDS' HANDICAP, of 335 ao<ra. lot. Overhaul .. 9 7 Caaiaader .. ■ 0 Full Feather 9 7 Waterlow .. • 0 Pangolin 8 10 Plying Mlat . . 8 0 Klltnoyler 8 9 Arrowy .. 8 0 Marti! 8 6

With Wellington form to recommend him. Full Feather will probably be sent oat favourite for the concluding event. This half-brother to w capable, as was hit relative, of unwinding some pace when so inclined, and if in the desired mood to-day, with A. B. Ellis on his back, he should pro** his prowess over the somewhat weak opposition. The only candidate likely to trouble him is Pangolin, who will find the distance suitable and will hare the services of C. Emerson. Water low is also worthy of consideration. TRAINING NOTES. WINGATUI. ITHB run Special Ssrrtoa.) DUNEDIN, February IS. The light shower which fell last Bight was only beary enough to wot the p»n and lay the du*t on the top of the plough track at Wingatui this morning, and did not to any way affect the going. Tit* outside of the co arM proper, with the trMtlu 80ft oat from the raits in the straight, and over 35ft out round tit* top bead, and the plough tracks, were open (or fact work, and bmi of the galloping wai dene on the latter. Keen interest was ahowa ia the work, and a fair number of visitors were present to eee the final gallops. Paperchase was again the first to appear, and (he probably had the slowest ol the plough track to gallop on. She ran six furlong* with a light-weight up In 1.18 2-5, and did not impress track watchers at being forward enough to play an important part in the Pablieani' Handicap to morrow. Jaleux and Rigmarole, each looking well, were tantored on the grass track. Full Feather and Starahooter were companions over »U furlongs on the plough in 1.17 4-5, and finished on terms. Prickles, who will be ridden in the Cup by C. Castwood. went once round on the plough, and then ram nine furlongs in 2.7 1-5. Sodden Storm was (printed four furlongs along (he Pangolin best Court J eater sad Impertinence by a head over six furlong* on the plough in 1.19 4-5. Bean Geste, who looks well forward, and Troilna finished together at the end of five furlongs in 1.4 4-S. Bangs tahi was evidently sffscied by the heavy atmosphere, and made a good deal of noise while covering two circuits on the plough. The two champions. Limerick and Aussie, appeared OS the coarse together, and each was given s eonpla of rounds slow pses work on the plough. Limerick, who looks big and tasty, was sent along over the last three furlongs, which occupied 43 2-5. Count Cavour beat Amor home over sis furlongs on the ploagh in 1.18 t-8.
