CANTERBURY WOMEN'S CLUB.

LADY LIVERPOOL ENTERTAINED

It is now nearly nine years since Lsvdy Liverpool visited Christchurch, but the wonderful work she did during the long days of the war, when Lord Liverpool was Governor-General of this Dominion, has not been forgotten, and at the Canterbury Women's Club yesterday afternoon a large number of ito members, many of whom had worked under the banner of the "Lady Liverpool Committee" during those troublous years, assembled to do her Honour. Lady Liverpool, who wore a pretty frock of navy crepe de chine patterned all over ivith a small design in cerise and beige, and a navy straw hat wreathed with small, vivid, raffia flowers, was accompanied by Mrs George Helmore, whose guest she is at present. She was received by Mrs J. A. Flesher (president of the club), Mrs H. Holland (honorary president), and members of the committee, and presented with a beautiful bouquet composed of roses, carnations, fuchsia, and maidenhair fern. Mrs Flesher, in a brief speech, welcomed Lady Liverpool, ana expressed the pleasure members felt that ner interest in New Zealand had brought her amongst them again. Mrs Holland also welcomed Lady Liverpool, and referred to her great work during the war, when, besides many other activities, she had inaugurated the "Lady Liverpool Fund,' and when women throughout New Zealand, inspired by her enthusiasm and encouraged by tier example and personal service, had banded together and worked hard to provide comforts for the men at the Front. Lady Liverpool, m acknowledging the welcome, expressed pleasure at being back in "this City of sunshine and beautiful trees," and at meeting again many whom she had met and worked with at the depot in the days of the war. She congratulated the club on its progress, and went on to speak interestingly of the Women's Institute in England, branches of which have recently been formed in the North Island. Miss Lillian Hanham • and Miss Mary Taylor, who were accompanied by Mrs T. D. Kendall and Miss V. Kendall, then sang pleasingly, and Miss Agnes Lawlor played two much appreciated pianoforte solos, after which afternoon tea was served.

SOCIETY FOR PROTECTION OF WOMEN AND CHILDREN.

At the monthly meeting of the New Zealand Society for Protection of Women and Children the following members were present:—The president (Rev. C. A. Fraer), in the chair; committee, Mesdanies F. Biltcliff, J. Blackaby, T. D. Taylor, T. E. Taylor, Nurse Stringer, Miss C. Henderson, Adjutant Combs, Rev. W. Baumber, Mr C. R. N. Mackie, and the secretary (Miss Cardale) . Apologies were received from Mesdames W. G. Roberts, T. Tomlinson, and Miss L. Tabart, and Mr J. A. S. Wait (hon. treasurer). The following motion was passed and placed pn record, members standing:— "That the Society for the Protection of Women and Children places on record its appreciation of the life work of the late Mr S. E. McCarthy, sometime Resident Magistrate of the City and lately a solicitor in our midst, whoso ready counsel was of 6uch continuous value to the Society, of which he was an honorary solicitor and much esteemed member."

The following members were chosen to attend a conference of the New Zealand Societies of Protection of Women and Children to be held in Wellington: Mrs T. Tomlinson, Mr C. R. N. Mackie, and the secretary. The treasurer sent in the financial statement. Remits for conference 'were dealt with. After the important cases were heard the Committee adjourned. COMING-OF-AGE. To celebrate the coming-of-age of their daughter, Dora, Mr and Mrs C« A._ Lawson entertained a number of friends at a social evening at their residence, Nayland street, on Thursday evening. The programme consisted of music and dancing, and later a dainty supper was enjoyed. Mr A. Tuthill proposed the toast of the guest of the evening, and Mr K. Coleman that of Mr and Mrs Lawson. Mr Lawson, in replying, presented his daughter with a gilt key tied with a bow of blue satin ribbon, and Miss Dora Lawson made a few appropriate words of thanks Those present included Misses M..
