WAIMAIRI.

The ordinary meeting of the Waimairi County Council was held last evening, when there were present Crs. T. Newnham (chairman), E. W. Hawke, M.P., G. Shipley, H. Kitson, C. E. Cross, H. Paterson, G. T. Mulcock, W. J. Walter, and W. P. Spencer. Arising oat of the decision of the previous meeting, that the Minister for b**>** be asked for a grant of £SOO towards the proposed Mairehau Park of 92 acres, or. Jiawke reported that more information v. as required by the Government before any grant could be made. It, would like to know what authority the Council would have over the park, and that all negotiations would be through the Council. Cr Hawke reported that he had seen most of the persons who had not yet the dedication transfers of their f ronta ,g" in Vague's road, and hoped to have tne whole matter completed shortly. i The foreman's report stated that the contractor was making good progress with tne work on the Styx river. The aides bad been cut back from the lower end at Radeliffes road bridge, and he was at present cutting back the sides from the bridge to the railway. . _ The foreman asked what action the ooun cil had decided to take in regard to the line of willows, and the wire netting fence through Mr Bay's property, which were obstructing the flow of the water. The fence had caused a bank of weeds to form u the river, and the contractor complained that Mr Ray ordered him off his property when he cut the willows the fence. It was decided to obtain legal advice on the matter. Mr Kearnev, of Boulton street, waited on the Council, asking that a fence erected by an adjoining landowner in the middle of the street be set back to the boundary of his property. Mr Kearney said he approached the Council five years ago in regard to the fence, and was assured that steps would be taken in that direction. The chairman said that two and a half vears ago notice had been given for the removal of the fence. It was decided that the fence must be removed within a month. The inspector's report stated that notice had been served on Mr Waring to discontinue draining his pig sty and cowyard into Spencer's drain and to provide drainage to dispose of liquid matter in a sanitary manner, failing which proceedings would be taken to enforce the provisions of tue Health Act. It was reported that notice to remove plant growth on the roadß had been served on 25 landowners. A demolition order in respect to premises in John's road, Belfast, was left to Or. Cleland to report. . The County Clerk's report stated that in regard to the recent judgment of Mr Justice Adams in the matter of the erection of shops at the corner of Holmwood road and Rossall street, a number of re j> lde ? tß .s* that district had promised upwards of 480 towards the coet of an appeal against the decision. The Council's solicitors had been instructed to enter the appeal. An application for a permit to erect an oil service station by Mr F. Woods, also applications for permits by Messrs J. Jones and D. A. Gunns to build seven shops at the corner of Holmwood road and Rossall street, were refused, pending the decision of the appeal against the Supreme Court judgment. A letter was received from the City Council advising that a meeting regarding the advisability of reducing the fees for rubbertyred vercles would be held on the 22nd inst. Messrs Shipley and Walter were delegated to attend. It was agreed to exchange an area of 81 acres on the North road for the piece of proposed new road through Mr Spiers'a property to make provision for the deviation of the roadway leading up to the new bridge over the Waimakariri. It was decided to call a conference of local bodies to consider the question of making the Christmas holidays uniform. The Drainage Board advised that ihe laying of the sewer in the North "oatf would be put in hand as soon as possible: that it withdrew its contribution of £ 75 per annum towards the River Styx, and would undertake the cleaning of that part of the river in the Board's area. A contribation of £2O would be paid in future. It was decided to take steps to secure a Government Commission to provide for the cleaning of the river. A request to change the name of Bone's road to Willow Ridge was -efnsed. The application for the sanction of the £30,000 loan for the Fendalton roads was agreed to.
