HOLIDAY TRAFFIC.
RAILWAYS WELL PATRONISED. The Canterbury railways experienced a fairly busy day yesterday, the express trains for the south, and the different excursion trains being well patronised. Close upon 1600 passengers were conveyed south by the express trains. The first was a full train, and carried 430 passengers; the relief express which left 20 minutes later took 600 passengers. The midday express train took 350 passengers, and the relief which followed at 12.45 p.m. carried 200 passengers. The Arthur's Pass express took 250 passengers, and the relief train, which left at 8.40 a.m., conveyed about 150 additional. The excursion train for Timaru left Christchurch with 11 carriages and three had to be put on at Ashburton. which place the train left with 530 passengers. The Kaiapoi United Friendly Societies' excursion to Timnru was attended by close on 500 people. The Rangiora United Friendlv Societies' excursion to Ashburton also was attended by 500. A special train was run to Motukarara and carried about 150 passengers.
