t'raost oub ow.v cokbesfoxdext.) LONDON. November "J7. The directors of the Midland Bank announce that Admiral of the Fleet Earl Jelli c-oe has been appointed to a seat on the Board of the Bank. Lord Jellic-oe will thus assume his third directorship, as he is already a member of the London Board of the Bank of Zealand and a director of Cavzer, Irvine and Co., Ltd., of which company Admiral Sir Charles Madden is also a director. Great regret is felt by the members of the Alassio Chess Club by the resignation of Mr S. S. Blackburne of the post of honorary secretary. Mr Blackburne. who started this club in Italy two years ago, has been untiring in his eiforts to make it a success. His courtesy and energy have combined to make chess one of the most successful offshoots of the British Club. A vote or' thanks was passed by the committee of tile club to Mr Blackburne. and Mrs Richards has been elected honorary secretary in his place. Mr Blackburne was formerly Chess Editor of the "Canterbury Times," and is well known in chess circles as the author of "Terms aud Themes of Chess Problems.'' At the Sheldonian Theatre, Oxford, on November '.2lth, the Vice-Chancellor, in Congregation, conferred a number of degrees. New Zealauders in the list were:—D.Phil., D. E.
