SCHOOL PRIZES.

MISS DIGBY'S COMMERCIAL SCHOOL.

Students o£ Miss Digby's Commercial School assembled in the Jellieoe Hall last night for the annual prize-giving ceremony. The annual report by the principal, Miss 31. D. Digby, stated: — The Echooi year just ended shows an excellent record o£ work done and results achieved by pupils. All the day and evening classes were v.ell attended. A total o£ 2-13 students entered for the Pitman's examinations during the year, and 230 speed and theory certificates were granted by Pitman's Examination Department, Melbourne. Four speed certificates were also awarded to Gregg writers by the Christchurch Shorthand Writers' Association. The number of certificates gained during the year constitutes a re.ord in the history of the school, and an increase of U'J over the previous year. Eighteen of the school students were successful in passing the Public Service examination for shorthand-typists, Eileen obtaining second place on the order of merit list in tlie junior examination. Of the four candidates presented for examination in Standard VI. work, three obtained proficiency and one a competency certificate. A large number of enquiries lor our trained students, capable of filling positions as shorthand-typists, bookkeepers, and junior clerks, resulted in 385 permanent and temporary appointments being received by pupils during the year. Last June our matriculation coach, -Mr S. A. Clark, was appointed an inspector of schools in tho Hawke's Bay district, and we accepted his resignation with keen regret. Mr H. Hpndersun, M.A., was appointed to the position and is proving himself a w-orthy successor to Mr Clark. Towards the latter end of the

year the school was transferred to a new and up-to-date building in Worcester street West. The building was specially designed and constructed to meet school requirements, and no commercial school in New Zealand is better accommodated than we are. The change has been much appreciated by students and staff, and the efficiency of the school has been mueh improved by yie modern facilities for instruction provided. Sports Clubs—The Girls' Hockey Club m connexion with the school this year entered three teams for the various Saturday competitions conducted by the Canterbury Ladies' Hockey Association. The Senior A and B teams secured third place in their respective competitions, being also the runners-up in the annual six-a-side competitions held on June 3rd. The Junior A team succeeded in reaching the semi-finals in same competition. Two members of the Senior A team accompanied the Canterbury representative team to Timaru to participate in the annual tournament, and had the distinction of playing.in the final game which gave Canterbury the honours for the 1028 season. Towards the end of the season, and on the invitation of the Akaroa Ladies' Hockey Club, a team o£

players journeyed to Alraroa,, ami were very hospitably entertained by tiio local players, a return game being played at the end of the season ih Christehurch. Both matches (which were very evenly contested) were won by the school team. The Basketball Club entered four teams 111 the competitions .controlled by the Christchurch Basketball Association, the first team securing third place in the A Grade competition. We have to thank Mr Cltas. Bean, Messrs Whitcombo and Tombs, and "A Friend" for again presenting prizes. ! The prizes were presented to the successful students by the Mayor, Mr J. K. The annual brenking-up ceremony o£ the St. Saviour's Girls' Orphanage was held yesterday afternoon, when, in spite of the heavy downpour o£ rain there was a largo attendance ot friends and patrons. Mr C. E. Jones, the chairman of the School Committee, presided, and extended a welcome to Bishop and Mrs West-Watson, to Dean Julius, and to Sir H. Heaton lihodes, who presented the prizes. Mr Jones said that the school was one 01 the greatest assets they had, and he hopett that it would not have to closo down through lack of finance. Indeed, he personally -would fight very hard to keep it going. Under the direction of Miss Badman the children provided an ' entertaining musical programme which included an original play iu three acts, the work of the children themselves. The prize-giving then followed. Sir Heaton Rhodes said that presenting prizes to eager children was one of the things lie had always looked forward to, and it was a duty he had been called upon to perform regularly for 30 years. He thanked them for their entertainment and wished them a merry Christmas and a happy holiday at Sumner. The Bishop also addressed a few words to the children, who were then left to enjoy a large quantity of sweets bestowed upon them by Dean Julius.
