MOVEMENT FOR REESTABLISHMENT.

DUNEDIN, November 30

At a recent meeting of the Associated Chambers of Manufactures of Australia, held at Adelaide, consideration was giyen to the question of increased shipping facilities between Australiaand New Zealand, particularly with the South Island. Tlie Dunedin Chamber of Commerce has been advised by the secretary of tho Australian body that the following resolution was unanimously approved:— "That the necessity for a regular direct shipping service between Australia and tho . South Island of New Zealand, which was withdrawn during the war, is hereby declared, and,, the executive be directed to take immediate steps in the direction of bringing about the re-establishment of such service, in which action tho Federal Government be approached to exempt trading between the southern portions of the Commonwealth (including Tasmania) and New Zealand from the operations of the coastal clauses of, the Navigation Act, and that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to the Chambers .of Commerce at Hobart, Dunedin, and Invercargill.'' The letter also stated that tlie executive was taking such steps as wore within its power to re-establish the service, which existed for many years prior to the war, on an improved basis, and earnestly asked , the assistance of the Dunedin Chamber in 'its attempt to achieve that object. A letter was also received from a prominent Melbourne business man suggesting that a British company should be approached to inaugurate a regular fortnightly service, say from Montreal, via New York aud Panama Canal to Wellington, thence Lytteltou Dunedin, Bluff, and Hobart, to Melbourne. He suggests that this would be an attractive trip for tourists.
