"The wicket for the first Test, which commences to-morrow, is very satisfactory, with more grass than usual, but if the match extends beyond four day? it will begin to wear and the side which loses the toss will be unfortunate," write,s C. G. Macartney. _ "Both Ryder , and Chapman are optimistic, The heat in Brisbane is most oppressive and humjd with a tendency to thunderstorms."
Ironmonger, when having a knock at the nets to-day, received a severe blow on the cheek, which put him out of ac-tion.--Australian Press Association.
ENGLISH WRITER'S CHOICE. LONDON, November 28. The Hon. L. H. Tennyson, writing in the "Daily Chronicle," says that Australia has an enormously powerful batting side, but their bowling is insufficient to turn the scale in the Australians '• favour. The Hon. Mr Teiyiyaon selects t\vo teams, the first to play if the wicket is hard and fast, in the following batting order:—Hobbs, Sutclift'e, Jardine, rnond, Hendren, Chapman, Leyland, Ames, Tate, Larwood, and Freeman. It seems extraordinary to leave out Geary, but four fast bowlers' are unnecessary. If Hammond is unable to play, Geary is the obvious man to take his place. He selects Leyland because he is a magnificent outfield. If the wicket is really sticky tho batting order should be: —Hobbs, Sutcllffo, Tyldeslcy, Mead, Hammond, Hendren, Chapman, Ames, Tate, White, and Freeman. —Australian Press Association.
