CLERK SURRENDERED TO POLICE. (press association telegram.) AUCKLAND, November 2D. The theft of five cheques of a total value of £56 belonging to his employer was admitted by Wm. Frederick Da* verne, a o 'ed 24, in the Police Court. The police said accused was employed as a clerk. Instead of paying the cheques to the bank he cashed them himself and went to Sydney last February. He wrote from Sydney to his employer regarding the matter and subsequently returned to Auckland and gave himself up to the police without a warrant for his arrest having to be executed. He had been placed on probation for two years for theft in 1923, and the Probation Officer said' he had done very well during that period. The Magistrate (Mr F. K. Hunt) said that under the circumstances accused would be given a last chance. He would be placed on probation for three years, and ordered to make restitution of the £56.
