NORTH CANTERBURY.

RANGIORA. A ladies' progressive doubles tournament was played on the Eangiora courts yesterday, and was won by Miss M. Meyer, Miss V. Blain being second. Thie Rangiora Band;gave the first of its monthly concerts in Victoria Park on Wednesday evening. A good programme was given, under Bandmaster W. Harman. Mr Charles Lawrence and his Radio Revue Company, from Christchurch, received- a very warm welcome at tho Town Hall on Wednesday evening, when they gave an entertainment in aid of the funds of the Rangiora District School. After the entertainment the company were entertained to supper by tlie members of the school committee. LEITHFIELD. The funeral of the late Mrs Emma Susana Rhodes took place on Wednesday afternoon at the Balcairn Cemetery. The chief mourners were Mrs E. Watson (Enfield) and Mr J. Rhodes. The pall-bearers were Messrs W. G. Rhodes. Haydn Rhodes, Cecil Rhodes, and 1 Alfred Baker, all grandsons of the deceased. Those who sent wreaths , vcre; —Mrs Baker, sen., Mr and Mrs Alfred Baker. Haydn and Cecil Rhodes, Mr and Mrs Joseph Neale, Mrs Penticost. and family, Mr and Mrs Frank i Bod en and family, Mrs Suzanne Ayers and family, Mr and Mrs Shaw, Mr and Mrs C. C. Jones and daughter, Jack and Lina Hocking, and the Canterbury Pilgrims' Association. The service at the graveside was conducted by tho Rev. 11. J. W. Knights. OXFORD. The rainfall on Tuesday afternoon and night was at times exceptionally heavy, the amount recorded being 1.52 inches. Although it has effectively stopped shearing operations, it was a very welcome rain, crops of . all kinds being benefited by it. The quarterly summoned meeting of tho Loyal Qust Lodge was held on Tuesday, Bro. K. Pawsey presiding. One new member was initiated. The D.G.M., Bro. W. Gardner, with P.D.G.M, Bro. W. Smith paid a visit to the lodge, the former installing the officers elected for the ensuing term as follows: 1.P.N.G., Bro. Iv. Pawsey; N.G., Bro. J. A". Forbes; V.G.. Bro. E. Wayland; IS. S., Bro. F.j W, Gilbert; L.M., Bro. M. Richardson. The following minor officers were appointed: Supporters to N.G., Bro. T. Gibson and Sister Mellor; supporters to V.G., Bro. G. Bennett and Sister Richardson; warden, Bro. W. Finlay; giiardian, Bro. W. Cooper. The retiring P.N-G., Bro. L. C. Tyler, was thanked for his services to the lodge," and it was decided that his name be placed on the merit board, 'that'he, receive a Past Officer's 'certificate, and .that he be recommended to receive the purple degree. <

SEFTON. The annual meeting of the Scfton Branch of the W.C T.U. was held in the Presbyterian Schoolroom,. Mrs Thorne presiding over a good attendance. The reports of the secretary and treasurer were presented and adopted. The sum of 10s was voted to the Willard Home at Palmerston North ana os to the Presbyteriau Church for the use of the schoolroom for meetings. The election, of officers resulted as follows:—President, Mrs P. J. Thorne; vice-presidents, Mrs Farrar, Mrs Ford, and Miss McLean; treasurer, Mrs GRobertson; secretary,. Mrs Withers; "White Ribbon" (prp.tem) agent, Mrs Thorne: philanthropic «lnd Press,-Mrs Withers. WAIRUKU. The Waikuku Girls' Club held its final meeting "at- Mis 3 Cross's home. It was . decided to give £6 to the foreign mission fund and the same to the orphanage fund. Musical items v/ere given by Mrs Nelson, Club girls, and Miss Cross. The Rev. Mr Nelson thanked the club for the donations. Supper was served by Miss Cross.

PREBBLETOSf. The course of home nursing conducted in this centre by Sister D. Christian, is nearing its;close and the examination of candidates will be held next month. A team of horses attached to a farm lorry, owned by Mr C. Barr, took fright while standing m front of the local store and bolted down the' road. A passing motorcyclist . endeavoured to check the runaways, but the horses, swerving to the side of the road, managed to get one on each side of a telegraph pole aud were thus brought to a standstill. Tho fore-carriage of the lorry was smashed and a bicycle lying on the roadside in the course of the runaways also suffered considerable damage. HORNBY. A letter from Dr. Telford was receired by the Hornbv School Committee, on tiie strength, of which the school picnic to be held on December Bth has been postponed indefinitely. Owing to the mischief perpetrated in the swimming baths, the Committee has closed the baths to the general public, and in future they will be used for school purposes only.

STAIRCASE. A very pleasant evening was spent at the home of Mr and Mrs Chas. Wain. Games, competitions, and dancing were indulged in. Items were given by Mrs Chas. Wain, Mrs Trowbridge, Messrs P. O 'Riley, C. R. Gibbons, and J. Middleton. Competitions were won by Miss B. Little and Messrs S. Trowbridge and p." Little. A lucky spot waltz was won by Mrs P. Little and Mr P. o'Riley. Supper was served, the tables being prettily decorated with sweet peas and maidenhair fern. On behalf of those present Mr P. Lit'tle thanked the host and hostess for the very pleasant evening.
