American shipbuilders are still looking expectantly for orders as a result of tho passing of tho Jones-White Act. They are encouraged to go ou hoping by the ocean mail contracts already made or pending which provide for the building of vessels of a speed sufficient to meet.the requirements of the Post Office Department. Contracts in sight, they believe, involve the construction of about twenty vessels, ranging from 13 to 20 knots and 8000 to 16,000 gross tons. There is also a possibility that some vessols with a speed of 24 knots and minimum gros3 register of 20,000 tons may oc included, according to New York gossip (states, the ".Shipping World"). In the ovent of the United States Lines being sold, the purchasers may havo to consider the early construction of two new vessols to run with tho Leviathan, "vessels possibly of 40,000 tons or more with a speed of 25 to 28 knots, and costing in the neighbourhood of 15,000,000 dollars." Orders are also said to be pending for two and possibly four turbo-electric passenger and cargo vessels for tho Dollar Steamship Line, vessels ranging from 12,000 to 16,000 gross tons, with a speed of 18 to 20 knots. Tho building of these vessels is dependent on the terms of the trans-Pacific mail contract as ultimately worked out. Other proposals o£ other companies include:—Munson Steamship Lines: Two vessels of 16.000 tons or more, for the New York-Brazil-River Plate service. Atlantic Gulf and West Indies Steamship Lines: Two turbine passenger and cargo ships of 11,300 tons, for the New York-Havana service. Tho Export Steamship Corporation: Four passenger and cargo vessels, for tho New York-Mediterrannean trado; 16 knots. The Matson Navigation Company: Two vessels for the San Francisco-Honoluln-Pago-Sydney run; IS knots. The Grace Line: Ono or three vessols of 1G knots, to be built in about three years.
