Northey, who has been s member of the staff of the Blackwater Mines Company for the past fifteen years, has resigned his positidn owing to ill-health. I Mr and Mm G. Bobinson and Miss Bobinson, of Waiuta, have left for Christchurch, where they will in future reside.' ' Mr James Williams, of Blackball, died at the Grey Hospital this morning after a brief illness. He was 38 years of age, a native of Scotland, and was by occupation a coalminer. He leaves a widow. _ Mr E. 0. Palmer, of the Greymoutb Postal staff, left this morning on a holiday visit to Wellington. Mr EL E. Holland, MJP., arrived this afternoon from Christchnrch. Mr M. E. Bettel, District Health Inspector, left to-day for- Christchnrch on holiday. The death of Mr Gerald Thomas Joyce, West Coast representative of The Press occurred early this morning at the Grey Hospital, following an operation for the removal of a goitre. Deceased, who was a native of Greymouth, was 50 years of age, and leaves a widow and one daughter. Some years ago he joined the literary staff of the "Grey Biver Argus," retiring therefrom to take np duties for The Press. Mr J. Kennedy (Bunanga) left to-day for Christchnrch.

Government Subsidy Graoted. Mr T. E. X Seddon has received telegraphic advice from the Minister for Public Works that he has approved of a subsidy of £750, at £3 to £l, for protective works at the locality of the erosion of the Little Wanganui river, in South Westland. Waikokopn Bridge. The rolled steel joists and hardwoQd timber for the Waikokopn between Waiho and the Pox Glacier, have arrived in Wellington, and will be, sent to the site of the bridge with dispatch. Delay in this and other _ urgent bridge work has been caused owing to material being held up in Australia, during the recent strike. Timber Shipments. : Daring next week timber shipments aggregating two million feet will be. exported from the West. Coast—2os,ooo feet by the Kaimai for Wellington, 805,000 by the Gabriella for Sydney, and 900,000 by the Kaponga for Melbourne and Adelaide.' The demand for white pine in Australia at present is' good. New Potatoes. Strongly supporting the growing of potatoes at Barrytown for the early markets at Ghristehnrch, Mr EL W. Eitchingham, president of. the West Coast A. and P. Association, abont three years ago drew attention to the particularly good conditions—mild winters and immunity from frost—at Barrytown, and urged farmers to; give potato-grow-ing a triaL The first of the new season's supply was sent to the Christchurch market a fortnight ago, and other consignments have since pome forward; and made very remunerative prices.
